(This is the core of the plan. All essential concepts will be presented with explanations,
examples, and short exercises/practices. See to it that each MELC will be given
emphasis/be explained on this part.)
1. Engage
Assess student’s prior knowledge and identify possible misconceptions. Create a desire
to learn among the learners use of the KWL (to create interest and generate curiosity).
2. Explore
Provide students with common, concrete learning experience; student centered and
incorporates active exploration; apply process skills (observing, questioning,
investigating, testing predictions, hypothesizing, communicating with peers or
teachers; students work in cooperative learning environment without direct
instruction from the teachers; students are given hands-on experiences before any
formal explanation of terms, definitions, or concepts are discussed or explained by the
teachers.
Aim: link previous knowledge to the present topic/content; discover new
knowledge without direct instruction.
3. Explain
Minds-on phase: more teacher directed and guided by the student’s prior experience
during the exploration; describe their understanding and pose questions about the
concepts they have been exploring; new questions will be generated; essential and
minds-on part of the lesson; initial part is giving the students the opportunity to
express their own explanations and ideas (after the students’ explanation, the teacher
introduces scientific and technical information in a direct manner);
MEANING-MAKING
4. Elaborate
Activities that will encourage students to apply their new understanding of concepts
while reinforcing new skills; students are encouraged to check for understanding, or to
design new experiments or models based on the new skills or concepts they have
acquired; develop a deeper and broader understanding of the concepts;
TRANSFER
5. Evaluate
Conduct self-assessment; portfolios, performance-based assessments, concept maps,
models, journal logs; can be considered as a Summative assessment.
Aim: reflect upon new learning; assess student’s understanding and progress;
identify areas of difficulty and provide remediation.
