Slows the growth of micro-organisms by -Treats infections in client who have penicillin

-Legionnaires’ disease, pertussis, acute
diphteria, and treats chlamydial infections

Complications Medication Administration


-Nausea, vomitting, epigastric pain -Eteric-coated tabs
-Prolonged QT intervals causing dysrhythmias -Granules for oral suspension
-Ototoxicity with high-dose therapy -Powder for injection

Contraindications/Precautions
Contraindications: Liver disease and QT prolongation
Precautions: Pregnancy Risk B, breastfeeding, seizure
disorder Nursing Interventions
-Administer with meals if GI
complications
-Avoid use in clients who have
prolonged QT intervals
-Monitor for hearing loss, vertigo
Interactions
and tinnitus
-Inhibit the metabolism of antihistamines, theophylline,
carbamazepine, warfarin, and digoxin, which can lead to
toxicity
-Verapamil, antifungal medications, & nefazodone inhibit
metabolism, creating potential toxicity of erythromycin Client Education
-Complete entire prescription of
medication
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness -Report signs of superinfection
-Absense of infections
-Manifestations of infection disappear
