Teacher’s notes for the Comprehension Test: 
 Pinocchio 
 

• Do this test after you have read the whole book with the class. 
• Ask the children to fill in their name and the date at the top of the page. 
• Tell the children that this is part of the Pinocchio story. 
• Ask them to read the text silently. 
• If there are any words they have forgotten, tell them not to worry. Tell them to 
read everything they can. 
• When they have finished reading the text, ask them to read each question one at 
a time. 
• Do not give any help. 
• Then ask them to read the three possible answers that are given. 
• Ask them to underline which answer they think is correct. 
• Do not allow the children to talk or to copy each other’s work. 
• Collect the test papers, mark the scores and fill in the results on the class record

Comprehension Test: Pinocchio

The owner of the puppet theatre gave Pinocchio five pieces of gold.  
‘Give them to your father, Geppetto,’ the man said.  
So Pinocchio said goodbye to the other puppets and set off for home. On the way 
home, Pinocchio met a fox and a cat. ‘Good morning, Pinocchio,’ said the fox. 
‘How do you know my name?’ asked Pinocchio. 
‘I saw your father today,’ replied the fox. ‘He paid his last piece of gold for your 
ABC. Now he hasn’t got any money.’ 
‘He will soon have lots of money,’ said Pinocchio. ‘Look. I have got five pieces of 
gold.’ 
He took the pieces of gold from his pocket and showed them to the fox and the 
cat. The cat looked at the gold and her eyes opened very wide. 
‘What will you do with five pieces of gold?’ she asked. 
‘I will buy a new ABC and I will go to school,’ said Pinocchio. ‘I will give the rest of 
the gold to my father.’ 
‘School?’ laughed the fox. ‘Don’t go to school, Pinocchio. Come with us to the 
Field of Gold. Plant your pieces of gold there. Then a money tree will grow. Soon 
you will have a hundred pieces of gold!’ 
‘Are you sure?’ asked Pinocchio. 
‘Oh, yes,’ said the fox.  
‘Then I will come with you to the Field of Gold,’ said Pinocchio. 
Pinocchio and the fox and the cat walked all day. At last they came to a small 
hotel. That night the cat had a big bowl of fish for her dinner and the fox ate 
three chickens. But Pinocchio was not hungry. He went to his room and dreamed 
of the money tree. 
In the morning, the fox and the cat were not in the hotel. 
‘Now I must pay the cat and the fox’s hotel bill!’ said Pinocchio. So Pinocchio paid 
the bill with one piece of gold. Then he went on his way. ‘Soon I will have lots 
more gold!’ he thought. ‘I don’t need the fox and the cat.’

• Do this test after you have read the whole book with the class. 
• Ask the children to fill in their name and the date at the top of the page. 
• Tell the children that the words all come from the Pinocchio book. 
• Tell the children to listen to each sentence that you read. Read the first sentence 
to the class and stress the word in bold print. Say the word in bold print again, on 
its own, when you have finished the sentence. 
• Ask the children to choose which word they think it is from the three possible 
words they are given for that sentence. 
• Ask them to underline the word of their choice. (If they make a mistake and want 
to change their mind, tell them to cross out the wrong answer and underline the 
correct answer.) 
• Repeat this procedure with each sentence. 
• Make sure the children know which number sentence you are reading each time. 
• Do not give any help. 
• Do not allow the children to talk or to copy each other’s work.
