What is a liberal arts education?
So, where is Sioux Falls, South Dakota?
Safe, with a Low Cost of Living
The Ultimate College Town
“It's the type of place where people
open the door for you even if you are
several steps behind. People actually get
out of their way to help someone,
something I appreciate and do in
response. It's a cozy city, in which it
takes a short time to feel like home. No
traffic, great parks, good night
entertainment and more, made it
everything I was looking for.”
-- Juan Juliao, Colombia

Pawan Subedi, ‘22
Hometown: Damak, Jhapa, Nepal
High School: Uniglobe College (Kathmandu)
Majors at AU: Computer Science & Data Science
Activities at AU: Augustana Student Association,
Asian Student Organization, Soccer Club, Volleyball
Club, Hult Prize Club

Why did you choose AU?: “I wanted to go a small,

private university, not in a huge city but also not in a
small town. I wanted to study in peaceful area, but an
area that still has opportunities and fun activities.
Also, AU had excellent CS and DS majors, which made
it perfect for me.”

Favorite thing(s) about Augie?: “My favorite things

are all the friends I’ve made, as well as the amazing
professors. AU has provided me with so many
opportunities to excel in many areas of my life, not
only academically.”
Barsha Shah, ‘23
Hometown: Kathmandu, Nepal
High School: GEMS Institute of Higher Education
Majors at AU: Art & Psychology
Activities at AU: Civitas Honors Program, GSA,
Open Minds Club, Augie Green

Why did you choose AU?: “I knew that I wanted to

be at a school with strong academics where I could
also grow as a person, not just academically. The
more I got to know about Augustana the more I
wanted to be a part of it. Also, it helps that AU is in
the heart of a peaceful town with a great downtown,
where its culture colors every street.”
Best part of your experience so far? “The best part
has to be how easy it was to make it my home. Even
before I got here, I already felt like I belonged at AU.
I've been here for only two months but the support
and encouragement that I've been getting from the
IPO, my professors, and my peers makes me feel like I
can really achieve everything I want to.”
Kirtana Krishna Kumar, ‘20
Hometown: Ghaziabad, India
Majors at AU: Biology and Philosophy, with a
Psychology minor
After AU: Currently working at Sanford Research
in Sioux Falls

Thoughts about your time at AU?: “The Augie

community is amazing. The warm hugs I received
from the International Programs Office when I
first arrived, and my professors’ constant
guidance and support made me feel like I was
home. I know that there is always someone who
cares about me and believes in me. This is the
community that Augie has given me; challenging,
yet supportive and compassionate!
Saakshi Kale, ‘19
Hometown: Mumbia, India
Majors at AU: Psychology, with minors in
Philosophy and Anthropology
After AU: Currently working as an impact
evaluator with The 4th Wheel, a non-profit
organization working to develop and strengthen
social development programs in India
Thoughts about your time at AU? “Being at
Augustana was the first time I ever got to truly learn.
Awarded 2019 Keynote Speaker’s Early
When I was in school back home, studying just meant
Influence Award
memorizing entire textbooks and printing them onto
exam papers. But at Augie I had the opportunity to
really absorb knowledge in so many different ways.
Having such a variety of avenues for learning, and the
constant encouragement of my professors to learn
with wonder and without bias, has been the greatest
gift. It has made me kinder; it has made me more
engaged with current affairs; and it has inspired me
to spread the joy of learning in as many ways as
possible.”
Samyak (Sam) Basak, ‘19
Hometown: Kolkata, India
Majors at AU: Computer Information Systems
and Economics
After AU: Currently working as an IT Support
Technician at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, SD

Why did you choose AU?: “When I arrived in 2015, I

was a little bit scared as well as nervous. But Augie
welcomed me with open arms. The community at Augie
is very warm and welcoming. I found myself in ease and
comfort. Over the 4 years, I was able to forge many
lifelong friendships. It's because of my friends, that I
was able to experience fishing, tubing, ice skating
among others. The professors are incredibly supportive
and want to see everyone succeed. Augie prepared me
in every way, and I am so thankful for the opportunity
of a lifetime. Augie truly brings out the best version of
yourself.”
Darwin Garcia, ‘19
Hometown: Tegucigalpa, Honduras

Majors at AU: Physics and Math

Activities at AU: Augustana Student Association,

Viking Advisor, Society of Physics Students
Treasurer, Soccer Club, Catholic Campus Ministry

Why did you choose AU?

“Of the many schools I applied to, AU stood out
for the personal assistance I had through the
application process. I felt a strong sense of
community whenever I heard about it and this
remained true when I got here.”
Darwin is currently attending the Mayo Clinic
School of Biomedical Sciences in their biomedical
engineering and physiology PhD program.

While at AU: Two summers of paid

undergraduate research, Chemistry tutor,
Bassist for the Augustana Orchestra

After AU: Currently in a PhD program in

Nuclear Chemistry at Michigan State University

Thoughts about your time at AU? “The

research opportunities and attention from the
professors at AU helped me get to where I am

the world's leading nuclear physicists at an
internationally recognized research
institution.”
Alejandro Garcia, ‘17
Hometown: Quito, Ecuador
Majors at AU: Political Science and German

Why did you choose AU? “I definitely thought the

recruitment process reflected how much Augustana
cares about its students. My admission counselor
was so attentive and willing to answer my questions.
My scholarship package was a big factor too!”
Other thoughts about your time at AU? “The
professors care so much about you. They challenge
and support you at the same time. Augie also gives
you the freedom to take classes in areas you haven’t
experienced before. You become well aware of
different topics and tools that you need in life.
Moreover, Augie has many opportunities though
student clubs and organizations that form you as a
person in your four years here. It is truly a well-
rounded education.”
Jonas Gjesdal, ‘18
Hometown: Bergen, Norway
Majors at AU: Government/Intl Affairs & Economics
Activities at AU: Augie International Club, COUPS,
HAPPY, ASA, Cross Country, Washington Semester
After AU: Internship with the Norwegian Foreign
Ministry at the World Trade Organization
Currently: Pursuing his MSc in Finance at National
University of Singapore, a top-15 school globally

Favorite thing about AU?: “I love the fact that Augie

is a liberal arts school. I am a generalist by nature,
and the vast curriculum here fit me perfectly. It’s so
important to widen your horizons in a time where the
norm is to change jobs at least 10 times in your
lifetime. If I went to a Norwegian school, I would not
have been exposed to so many topics, such as
religion, philosophy, theatre, environmental science,
and so many more. I loved it.”
Shitong Zhao, ‘19
Hometown: Beijing, China
Majors at AU: Physics, Math, and Chemistry

Why did you choose AU?

“The small class sizes at AU is a huge bonus. It
promotes frequent interactions between students
and professors and results in a great
environment/community for all.”
While at AU, I was able to…: “conduct research
for two summers as an undergrad, once at Kansas
State and once at Augustana. And, I got paid!”

Shitong is currently attending Cornell University

as a PhD student in their applied and engineering
physics program, after turning down Rice,
Columbia, Virginia, Michigan, and others.
Kofi Gunu, ‘17
Hometown: Kumasi, Ghana
Majors at AU: Political Science and Economics

Thoughts about your time at AU? “The value of

the education I have gotten here, I don’t think I
would have gotten that anywhere else. It’s been
an amazing four years. Augustana is so
internationally minded, and I look forward to
taking my quality education from Augustana back
home with me to Ghana and make a lasting impact
on the lives of others.”

Kofi is currently attending Oxford

University on a fully-funded master’s
program as a Rhodes Scholar.
