Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Professional and Practitioners in
Counseling!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by


educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or
facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum
while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

Congratulations!

You have been progressing as a senior high school student under the
Humanities and Social Sciences strand.

You are now ready to embark in the new opportunity of learning how
knowledge and skills you acquired from Disciplines and Ideas in Social Sciences
(DISS) are applied and put into action for the improvement of the society and
providing solutions to social issues.

As a student of Humanities and Social Sciences or HUMSS, it is important


that you understand the purposes of your course, what are the works of the
practitioners of this particular field of science.

In this particular module, you will be introduced to one of the applied social
sciences which is counseling.

This module will help you learn and master the expected learning
competency. Use available resources like dictionary. Remember that you are
expected to submit learning evidences.

Instructions:

1. Study the table on the next page which shows the different disciplines
of social sciences and their focus descriptions.
2. Complete the table by writing your own understanding of the
importance of each discipline and how these disciplines help solve
social issues.
3. On the third column, give an idea of the importance of the said social
science discipline.
4. On the fourth column, explain how that specific social science
discipline can be applied to resolve social issue. You may give social
issue in your localities.
5. Select five disciplines only.
6. Don’t dwell too much for each, just try and express your ideas. The first
row has been filled with information to guide you.
7. Don’t copy the example.
8. Time yourself to work on this.
9. Stop writing after seven minutes and read your answers.

What is It

Thank you for giving your best in completing Activity 1.

Social science deals with discovering and establishing truths about society
including its physical and non-physical elements and the phenomena therein. It is
a broad body of knowledge about the society that it is divided into several
branches. Each branch focuses on a particular aspect of the society following
formalized course of academic and scientific process which makes them a
particular discipline.

As you have discovered in Activity 1, each discipline of social science deals


with unique social concerns. The knowledge, theories and principles of social
sciences can be applied in so many ways that can serve several benefits to human
kind and the world. These applications are of wide range and variety and social
scientists have been progressively working on them which resulted to formalized
and systematized activities following scientific and academic processes and
programs. These activities then follows unique courses and focuses on certain
school of thoughts thus developed into several applied social science disciplines.

Applied social sciences are founded from the theories and principles of social
sciences and are thus product of social science. In this course, we will focus on
three of the various disciplines of applied social science namely, Counseling,
Social Work, and Communication.

This module will introduce you into the applied social science discipline
called counseling.

Discover counseling and learn more about it while working and finishing

Meaning, Scope and Goals of Counseling


Merriam-Webster defines counseling as a “professional guidance of the individual
by utilizing psychological methods especially in collecting case history data, using
various techniques of the personal interview, and testing interests and aptitudes”.
In counseling, the counselor or the expert in this field, uses the insights and
principles of the different psychological theories that shed light in the understanding of
mental processes and human behaviors to provide appropriate guidance and interventions
to bring about positive changes and improved wellbeing of a patient referred to as the
counselee.
Counseling covers the areas of personal development, career enhancement, and
relationships improvement. Counselors help discover and develop potentialities and skills
of persons. They assist aspirants and professionals in establishing, maintaining and
advancing careers. Experts in the field of counseling help individuals improve
interpersonal skills, adjust and cope with the demands and conditions of relationships.
There are several goals of counseling.12 These include improvement of behavior,
coping mechanism, and guidance in making decisions in personal and professional aspects
of life, understanding of self and potentialities, fix relationship problems among others.
