“Welcome to SocSci 101N (Ethics) Class! I am your Professor, Dr. Godfrey G. Mendoza.
For this Course, you will be given a set of activities and you will be asked to submit some
outputs as your requirement for the completion of grades for this Course. Let me walk you
through to your course so you could comply with the requirements”

I. COURSE DESCRIPTION: SocSci 101N (Ethics)

This course is an introduction to the philosophical study of morality, including


the theory of right and wrong behavior, the theory of value, and the theory of
virtue and vice. Besides providing familiarity with the primary question
addressed within moral philosophy and the most influential answers given by
well-known philosophers, this course is designed to help you develop your
abilities to think critically and analytically about ethical issues.

Moreover, this course shall run for six (6) weeks, where 3 weeks is allotted for
Module 1 (Midterms, June 07, 2021, to June 23, 2021) and another 3 weeks for
Module 2 (Finals, June 28, 2021, to July 14, 2021). Please take note that for this
course, you cannot proceed to module 2 if you have not completed your
requirements in module 1.

Upon completion of this course, you will be credited with three (3) units if you
have completed all the two modules and submitted all the requirements.

II. COURSE OUTCOME: At the end of our course, it is expected of you to be able
to:
1. Integrate relevant principles of social, physical, natural and health sciences
and humanities to the concepts, theories, and principles of ethics.
2. Provide health care using the appropriate principles and concepts of ethics
to targeted clientele (individuals, family, population group or community).
3. Apply and adapt relevant ethical principles in nursing and health
particularly in the care of the sick clients in any health care settings.
4. Apply ethico-legal principles using evidence-based nursing care
approach.
5. Apply ethical reasoning and decision-making process to address situations
of ethical distress and moral dilemma.
6. Demonstrates skills in communication that are ethically acceptable and
appropriate with clientele, health team and significant others.
7. Adhere to protocol and ethico-legal principles of confidentiality in
safekeeping and releasing of records and other information.
8. Ensure a working relationship and/or support system based on trust, respect
and shared decision-making using appropriate principles of ethics when
providing health education.
9. Manage resources ethically and legally (human, physical, financial, time)
to ensure efficiency and effectively.
10. Engaged in ethically right and acceptable advocacies that deal with
health and adopts policies and foster the growth and development of the
profession.
11. Exemplify love for country in the service of the Filipinos.
12. Implement available system of informatics that are ethically appropriate
and acceptable.
13. Demonstrate caring as the core of nursing, love God, love of country and
love of people.

Study Package 1 for Module 1

This study package is designed for June 07 to June 24, 2021, and It contains 2
Units, Unit 1 for the basic ethics concept, and Unit 2 for the Moral Agent. It is
expected for you to have completed all the requirements on or before June 23,
2021.

Your Study Pack is composed of (but not limited to) reading materials, movie
films, and video clips and other available resources which you can use to further
understand the topic at hand. Some learning materials will be provided to you as
attachments to this main file while some video clips and films will be provided as
links.

For your convenience, you can also request the video file copies from me,
using the Telegram App. The video files and reading materials sizes are big and
cannot be sent through email, messenger, or FB. Hence the use of the Telegram
App.

Instructional Delivery Platforms:

For you to receive the learning materials, the following are necessary:

1. A Telegram App account. The video files and other learning materials file
sizes are big and cannot be sent through email, messenger, or FB. Hence
the use of the Telegram App.

What you can do:


A. Download and install the Telegram App from google play. (It’s free)
B. Follow the prompts to start using the app.

C. You should add my cellphone number to your contacts in your cellphone
so you will be connected. CP # 0917-631-3497

Once the Telegram app is ready to use, you can now message me so I
could send you the videos and files, which can be downloaded to your
phone for easy access even if you are offline.

2. Facebook and Messenger account.

What you can do:


A. Make sure that you have a Facebook (FB) and messenger account.
B. Your Account name and cover photo should be your actual picture or
photo and use your complete name using this format LAST NAME, FIRST
NAME, MIDDLE INITIAL (i.e, MENDOZA, GODFREY G.). FB and Messenger
account which does not show your actual picture and complete name will
not be accepted in the SocSci 101N (Ethics) FB group.
C. Once ready with your accounts, you should search for the FB group
SocSci101N (Ethics) BSN 1-2 and request invitation to join the group.

Once accepted, you can now receive and access all instructions, learning
materials, and notifications from me and your classmates through this
group.

3. Zoom account.

What you can do:


A. Make sure that you have cellphone or any gadget that can use to access
the internet/data network.
B. The Zoom app will only be used for online discussion and presentation which
will be as per schedule and will not be used for the entire duration of the
class or the course enrolled. The use of zoom meetings will depend on your
accessibility and internet connection.
C. If used, I will be sending you the Zoom ID number invitation and password
using your messenger account in advance before the actual date and
time of zoom meeting for you to have enough time to prepare before the
meeting. You are expected to join the Zoom meeting as scheduled and
notify me for any reason thereafter if you will not be able to join the
scheduled meeting.

Once accepted, you can now participate to the discussions and


presentation as indicated.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please make sure that your actual face and your complete
name are used in all your account (telegram, facebook, messenger, and zoom).
Students who use GIF for their face ID and nicknames only will not be accepted.

After watching and reading, you are required to submit an output which will form
part of your grade for the Midterm Grading.

“Okay, are you done reading and watching your materials? If so, let us
test your understanding of the concepts, shall we?”

For this Unit, you have to submit the following:

1. Individual Reflection-Reaction-Interaction: Do you remember the video


regarding the six hardest “would you rather” dilemmas that you watch? Did you
answer the questions? What was the result of that test? Based on the result of
that activity, post your reflection of your result on our LMS CANVAS created
for this SocSci 101N (Ethics) Class. Once posted in discussion section, your
classmates can react on your reflection posted, and at the same time, you
should react to theirs too.

2. Individual Reaction Paper: You will have to submit an encoded or


handwritten reaction to the principle “The End does not Justify the Means”.
This activity will be “Reaction Paper 1 of Unit 1: The Basic Ethics Concept: The
End does not Justify the Means”.

3. Group Output: You will have to create a virtual group of 4 to 5 members


(the learner has the option to choose their own group members that is more
accessible and comfortable to work with) and will do a group movie
analysis of “The First Purge”. An encoded or handwritten output will be
submitted as “Group Activity 1 of Unit 1: The First Purge”. The movie analysis
will be done by answering the following questions:

Questions:
a. Based on the movie, what is Purge about? And what is its purpose?
b. Based on your analysis, what ethical and moral principles were (1)
violated; (2) emphasized; and (3) promoted in the movie? Explain
your answers and site the part in the movie where the said principles
are manifested.
c. If “The Purge” will be conducted in the Philippines, what will be your
participation, will you be the “purger” or the “purged”. Explain and
justify your answer by using or citing at least three (3) specific ethical
or moral principles that you have learned from this unit.

For those of you who do not have computers or laptops at home, output will be
written on a bond paper, with your name on every page of the paper, and page
number on each. For those of you who have computers or laptop, output will be
encoded using WORD document or any other open access software (like WPS)
compatible to MS office ONLY. PDF, HTML, Notepad, and other writing formats will
NOT be accepted.

1. Group Output: You will have to create a virtual buzz group of 2 to 3


members (the learner has the option to choose their own group members
that is more accessible and comfortable to work with) and will answer the
“Group Activity 2 of Unit 2: You are your actions, and your actions are you”
in The Moral Agent (PDF) File.

2. Individual Reflection: You will submit an encoded or handwritten reflection


on the “Heinz Dilemma”. This activity will be “Reflection Paper 2 of Unit 2:
Heinz Dilemma”.

3. Individual Reflection-Reaction-Interaction: You will have to post their


reflection about the World Health Organization’s call to “End Virginity
Testing” and the “End of Female Genital Mutilation”. Post your reflection on
the FB group created for this SocSci 101N (Ethics) Class. Once posted, your
classmates can react on your reflection, and at the same time, you should
react to theirs too.

For those of you who do not have computers or laptops at home, output will be
