The battle was an engagement between Napoleon's forces and the Army of Bohemia near the village of Liebertwolkwitz on October 14, 1813. Both sides misread the other's intentions, leading to a developing mobile action.

The initial cavalry action involved Pahlen's Allied cavalry against the French 'rearguard' cavalry around Wachau and Markleeberg in the late morning and early afternoon.

Around 4:00pm, Murat led forward the infantry of the II and V Corps after the inconclusive cavalry action and approaching darkness.

0] SCENARIO 131014: “Liebertwolkwitz” – 14 October 1813

S axony, October 1813. Napoleon’s Grande Armee is concentrating around Leipzig in anticipation of
a major action against the combined allied armies. On the 14th of October , the lead elements of
Schwarzenberg’s Army of Bohemia appear to the South of the French positions. Needing more time to
assemble his forces, Napoleon orders Murat to fight a delaying action around the village of
Liebertwolkwitz. Rather than a defensive action, Murat contemplates an aggressive response to allies’
advance. Meanwhile Wittgenstein, leading the advance guard of the allied army, believes that he has
caught the rearguard of the retreating French, and quickly deploys convinced that he needs to bring the
French to battle before they slip away. Both sides have a poor appreciation of the developing situation
and the intentions of the other. As a result a mobile action develops in the rolling plain before
Liebertwolkwitz as both sides progressively commit troops to the action.
