Read the following situations. In 5-7 sentences, answer the questions below.

Situation : A group of indigenous people visited your school to conduct a seminar

on their culture and heritage. They showed the audience their celebration dance rituals
while dressed in bahag and malong.

1. How will you show appreciation for their performance?

Being a Filipino does not end when we prefer English to Filipino or hamburgers to sinigang;
rather, it ends when we have forgotten about our own literature, culture, and tradition to the
point of abandonment. Many indigenous peoples in the Philippines, such as the Ifugaos in the
Cordillera Mountains, have thrived in their relatively secluded yet self-sufficient settlements.
Despite the changes of many indigenous knowledge systems, forest sustainability practices
have remained mostly unchanged. By just paying much attention to what they are performing, it
would be considered as a big factor of appreciation towards them. Our initiative not only allows
everyone to discover the culture of others, but it also enables us to be proud of them and by
having a greater sense of appreciation and respect for the ways and culture they are
showcasing.

2. Some of your classmates are laughing at the dancers wearing bahag. How will you
react with their behavior?

It might be tough to deal with others' mockery and taunting. Their comments have the potential
to damage others’ feelings and can make someone feel insignificant. However, there are a few
things you can do to lessen the impact of their mockery and prevent it in the future. It is possible
to put a stop to the mockery by taking action and engaging with people who are criticizing other
people. I would really tell them to stop. Taking a firm stand and confronting individuals who
make fun of other people can be effective. I’ll calmly and assertively explain to them that I do not
like or no one would like what they were saying because it is a tradition or culture of people that
needs to be respected by anyone else.

3. As a student exposed to different cultures, beliefs and practices, how important is

effective communication?

Being culturally conscious allows us to communicate with people more successfully by knowing
their culture, which goes beyond language and syntax. Culture is a broad word that refers to the
habits, social behavior, and beliefs of a group of people or a civilization, and it is developed over
time.Culture instills in its members an implicit understanding of how to act in certain situations
and how to perceive the conduct of others in those settings. Communication has been an
important element of society from the dawn of time, and as civilization evolves, so do individual
communication patterns.
