Learner’s Tasks

Lesson Overview

Last week, you learned about analyzing a story in terms of its

elements. If you can remember, a short story has 3 elements:
characters, setting and plot. The characters are the people or
animals in the story. The setting talks about the place and the time
that the events in the story happened. It is a description of where
and when the story takes place. The plot is made up of the events
that happened in the story.

A short story can be fiction or non-fiction. Fiction refers to

situations that are magical/fantasy or make-believe that could not
happen in real life. Fiction stories are created from the author’s
imagination. They can be stories of mystery, horror,
fantasy/fairytales and science-fiction. The purpose of fiction stories
is to entertain the reader for fun.

Example of a fiction story

The Duck and the Golden Egg

One day, a farmer found a golden
egg in the duck’s nest, he couldn’t believe
www.bing.com

what he saw. “A golden egg!” he

exclaimed. “Where did this egg come
from? He thought somebody had played a
joke on him. He took the golden egg home.
1
“Keep this golden egg,” he told his wife. The next morning
he found a golden egg again.
The next day, he woke up early and went to see the duck.
The duck was still in its nest. When the duck left, he went to see
what was inside the nest. There was again another golden egg.
The farmer believed that the duck lays a golden egg. Then
he thought of getting all the golden eggs inside the duck’s
stomach. He wanted to have plenty of gold and become rich.
So he cut the duck’s stomach but he did not find any golden
egg. “What a loss!” The farmer exclaimed. The farmer felt sad. He
lost his duck that lays a golden eggs.

On the other hand, nonfiction refers to a situation that may

happen in real life. The story is true and it tells facts. The pictures are
realistic. Overall, the story tells about things that you can do, about
real people, events, things and places. The purpose of nonfiction
stories is to inform the reader.

Example of a nonfiction story

Noli and the Police Officer

Noli was on a vacation in his uncle’s

home in the city. One afternoon, he went to the
park with his neighbor. The park was not far from
his uncle’s home. There were many people in
the park. There were children playing Noli
enjoyed playing in the swing. He did not notice
that it was already getting dark. Noli looked for
his companion. He could not find him. Suddenly
he cried, “I’m lost! How will I find my way home?”
A police officer came by. He asked him where his home
was. Noli answered, “It’s over there near the tall buildings. The
house is painted green. There is a mango tree in the front

of the house.” The police officer said, “I can help you find your
way home.”
The police officer took Noli to his uncle’s home. His uncle
invited the police officer for dinner to thank him.

As a learner, do you like reading stories? How about writing

them? This week, let us learn how to write short stories
(fiction/nonfiction). But how are we going to do it? Let us consider
the following steps to guide you in writing your short story.

1. Pick the emotion you want to evoke Choose a feeling or

emotion you want to give to your readers: Examples: Happy,
Inspired, Excited, and Scared. It is what all the elements in
your short story will work together to achieve this.

2. Start with a strong opening. Stories are meant to be short so

you won’t have a lot of room for telling your story. Start well
with a good opening to keep the reader interested. Know
your target readers. Do they like action or dialog in the first
paragraph? Will they like visualizing it in their minds how the
setting looks like at the start of the story?

3. Build your story. Remember that you only have a certain

number of words. Time and space count, don’t waste it. Short
story cannot be lengthy. Every part of the short story is
important. Every sentence must build toward the emotion.

4. Perfect the ending. Don’t get lost. Focus on the emotion of

your story. Does your ending make sense? The plot should
come in naturally from where the story began. Everything you
wrote can lead to the ending of the story. Ask yourself: What
would be the best way to end the story and capture the
reader’s heart?

5. Read and write. Be reminded of the emotion of your story.

Spend some time away from your story then read your story
back at least three times. Pay attention to your plot,
characters, and setting. They should work together towards
your theme. Here you can revise or delete a part of your story.
Fix or get rid of unnecessary inconsistencies.
3
What to write? This is another difficult decision to make. The
following may help you pick a story to write. Ask yourself similar
questions like these;
1. What was the most embarrassing thing you’ve experienced in
the past few years?
2. When was the last time you cried, and what caused it?
3. What shocked you so much which made you speechless?
4. What was the very best or worst moment of your childhood?

With all these things being said, you are now ready to put your
heart in a pen and piece of paper for a short (fiction/nonfiction)
story.

Activity 1

Direction: Read each statement below. Write TRUE if the

statement is correct or FALSE if it is not. Do it on your answer sheet.

1. The pictures in the nonfiction story are realistic.

2. Fiction stories have the purpose of informing the readers.
3. In writing a short story, you have to start it well with a good
opening to keep the reader interested.
4. As long as you use many words in your story, do not pay attention
to your plot, characters, and setting.
5. Every part of the short story is important so every sentence must
work building toward the emotion in the story.
