2 WH- questions
 Wh- questions begin with a question word such as who, what, when, where, etc. We
put the auxiliary or modal verb before the subject.
question word + auxiliary/ modal + subject
 Who is used without a noun to ask about people
Who called while I was out? ~ Your mother.
 Whose is used to ask about possession
Whose is this car?/ Whose car is it? ~It’s Ted’s.
 What is used alone or before a noun to ask about things
What caused the fire? ~ Faulty wiring.
What is also used to ask about people, animals or things when there is an unlimited
choice of answers.
What music do you prefer listening to?
 Which is used alone, or before nouns, one/ ones or of to ask about people, animals
or things.
Which is your house?/ Which house is yours?/ Which of those boys is your son?
Which is normally used when there is only a limited choice of answers.
Which hotel are you going to stay at – the Park Hotel or the King hotel?
Which is also used with comparative and superlative forms.

 What + be + like is used to ask for a description of somebody’s character.

 What + do/does …. + look like is used to ask for a description of somebody’s physical
appearance.

3 Subject/ Object questions

 Subject questions are the questions we ask when we want to know the subject of the
sentence. These questions usually begin with the word who/ whose/ what/ which.
The verb is in the affirmative form.

Who told you the news? (*not: Who did tell you the news?)
Whose house was broken into last night?
What made that noise?
Which costs more – the package holiday or the cruise?
 Object questions are the questions we ask when we want to know the object of the
sentence. These questions usually begin with the words who, whose, what or which.
The verb is in the interrogative form.

4 Negative questions

 Negative questions are formed with not, but there is a difference in the word order
between the full form and the short form.
Full form: auxiliary + subject + not + verb
Did I not tell you not to talk to strangers?
Short form: auxiliary +n’t+ subject + verb
Didn’t I tell you not to talk to strangers?

 We use negative questions in speech to ask for confirmation and to express surprise,
admiration or annoyance.
Isn’t Tom going on holiday this week?
Don’t you know where Nick is?
Isn’t she a great hostess?
Can’t you be on time just for once!

5 Question tags

 Question tags are short questions added to the end of a statement to ask for
confirmation of, or agreement with, the statement. They are formed with an
auxiliary verb and the appropriate personal pronoun. They take the same auxiliary
verb as in the statement if there is one, otherwise, they take do/ does/ did.
He is in the hospital, isn’t he?
She didn’t come, did she?
 Question tags can be said with a rising intonation when we are not sure and expect an
answer or a falling intonation when we are sure and don’t really expect an answer.
She is lying, isn’t she (not sure)

He bought a new car, didn’t he? (sure)

 A positive statement is followed by a negative question tag, and a negative statement


is followed by a positive question tag.
She sings well, doesn’t she?
He won’t tell, will he?
*Note that everyone/ someone/ anyone/no one form their question tags with an

auxiliary verb + they.

a. Mục tiêu học phần (Course Objective)
- Giúp sinh viên nắm vững và hệ thống được những kiến thức ngữ pháp cơ bản về các
loại thì, động từ nguyên mẫu, danh động từ và các loại câu hỏi trong Tiếng anh để có
thể viết đúng dạng câu và vận dụng kiến thức này để phát triển kỹ năng ngôn ngữ và
kỹ năng biên phiên dịch Tiếng anh.

b. Mô tả vắn tắt học phần (Course Description)
Học phần này hệ thống lại kiến thức cơ bản về các loại thì, động từ nguyên
mẫu, danh động từ và các loại câu trong tiếng anh nhằm giúp sinh viên sử dụng chúng
để viết đúng dạng câu và vận dụng nó để phát triển kỹ năng ngôn ngữ và kỹ năng biên
phiên dịch sau này.
This course provides students with basic knowledge of tenses, infinitives,
gerunds and types of questions in English. Students are expected to use them to make
grammatically correct sentences and to develop language skills and translation skills in
the future.
