Representation of Hyperreality in Fandom through Fanfictions and Fan Activities

Abstract :The fandom phenomenon, frequently given negative lable due to the word ‘fan’, a short form of ‘fanatics’,
is matter-of-factly never free from various productive activities conducted by fans. Starting with
assumption referring to what Baudrillard says about hyperreality, this study is conducted to figure out how
hyperreality is represented in fanfiction as well as fan activities in form of members’ commentaries and
discussion. Several fanfictions of Harry Potter and Naruto collected from www.fanfiction.net and
www.archiveofourown.org alongwith their members’ discussions are taken as material objects.
Furthermore, this study is also attempted to find the ideologies interest beyond such representation.
Granting that Baudrillard’s framing concept of hyperreality is used to build an assumption, however, the
material objects are analysed using Hall’s representation theory particulary Foucauldian discursive model.
Since Foucauldian discursive model emphasizes on the production of knowledge through discourse
involving language representational system, the material objects analysed are also related to the contextual
background in which such discourse is constructed. Therefore, Hall’s representation is furthermore related
to Bell’s concept about cyberculture to lead the discussion. It is found that fanfiction as a form of
cyberliterature as well as fan activities in form of fans’ comments and discussions represent negotiation of
fans’ expectation in answering their dissatisfaction of the source text. The negotiation, however, leads to the
blurring distinction between signified and signifier, placing the works and activities in a pastiche condition,
with less attempt to be critical to the dominant ideology offered in source text.
