I. Overview

In this module, we will explore common laboratory apparatus used in general and
organic chemistry laboratory. You will be tasked to complete a table of apparatus.
You will be familiarized with their purpose and functions. With all of these, you
should know and choose the proper apparatus for carrying out an experiment.

II. Objectives

At the end of this module, you should be able to

1. Recognize different laboratory apparatus used in general and organic
chemistry.
2. Know the purpose of different laboratory apparatus used in general and
organic chemistry.
3. Properly choose apparatus in a certain experiment

III. DISCUSSION

1. Common Laboratory Apparatus

Some of you may be familiar with materials or apparatus used in a chemistry

laboratory. In this section, we will explore general laboratory apparatus used in

chemistry. Identifying and knowing the proper use will help ensure safe laboratory

practices.

Procedure:

Directions: I made a table below and you are tasked to complete the blank boxes.
For the illustration column, draw the apparatus itself! It is time to show your artistic
skills. Also, in this way, you will learn skills in research. You can research the
internet as a guide. To submit, kindly take a clear picture using a scanner app, and
upload in our Google Classroom folder Lab Module 2: Performance Task 2

2. Organic chemistry laboratory apparatus

Now that you learn what are the common laboratory apparatus. It is also essential,

since this is an organic chemistry course, to know the simple apparatus used in

organic chemistry experiments and reactions. Some are also presented as a collection

of apparatus or a setup.

Name Illustration Purpose/Description

Separatory To separate two

immiscible liquids.
funnel Commonly, a solute
is soluble in only one
of the liquids. Thus,
the solute is extracted
or separated from
other components of
a mixture. This
extraction is called
liquid-liquid
extraction.

11

Condenser To condense gases or
vapors back to its
liquid state. Usually,
cold water is drawn in
and out to aid in the
condensation
process. Several types
were illustrated. The
more complex
drawings yield better
condensation
efficiency since more
surface area is
exposed or in contact
with the cold water.

Heating To heat samples in a

Mantle glass vessels

12
FOR SLSU USE ONLY
Simple Simple reflux setup is
used to conduct
Reflux setup reactions at a
constant
temperature, at the
boiling point of the
solvent. Solvent
vapours from the
boiling reaction flask
are condensed back
to the flask. Hence,
the evaporation-
condensation cycle
can be prolonged for
a certain period of
time.

Büchner Used for filtration

with the aid of a
Funnel suction by vacuum. It
is made up of
porcelain and
perforated (punctured
with holes). Before
filtration, moistened
filter paper should be
put in the funnel.

13
FOR SLSU USE ONLY
Vacuum In this setup, the
büchner funnel is
filtration connected to a filter
flask (an Erlenmeyer
setup
flask with connection
out to a vacuum
pump or an
aspirator). Also, a
rubber filter adapter
(Filtervac) is used to
form a vacuum tight
seal between the flask
and the funnel.

Sublimation To purify some solids.

Some solids, when
apparatus heated, sublimes or
changes from solid to
gas. The vapors will
then be deposited to a
cold to form crystals.

Simple To separate liquids

with different boiling
distillation points. The more
volatile liquid (lower
setup
boiling point) will
evaporate, condense,
and collected to a
receiver.

Again, the table above shows only simple and/or common laboratory apparatus used

in organic chemistry laboratory. You will be familiarized to other equipment or

apparatus as your instructor will introduce it to coming modules.
