John Smeaton (1724-1792)

referred to as the “Father of Civil Engineering.” He

Thomas Telford (1757-1834) Karl von Terzaghi (1883-1963)
He was a Scottish civil engineer, architect and an Austrian born in 1883, was the “Father of Soil
stonemason, and road, bridge and canal builder. After Mechanics” and, for much of his career, the patron of
establishing himself as an engineer of road and canal Arthur Casagrande. Von Terzaghi spent much of 1912

Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923)

was a French civil engineer. A graduate of École
Centrale Paris, he made his name building various
bridges for the French railway network, most famously
the Garabit viaduct. He is best known for the world-
famous Eiffel Tower, built for the 1889 Universal
Exposition in Paris, and his contribution to building the
Statue of Liberty in New York. After his retirement from
engineering, Eiffel focused on research into
meteorology and aerodynamics, making significant
contributions in both fields.
• Shift in Concrete
Fazlur Rahman Khan (1929-1982)
was a Bangladeshi-American structural engineer and
architect, who initiated important structural systems for
skyscrapers. Considered the "father of tubular designs"
for high-rises, Khan was also a pioneer in computer--
aided design (CAD). He was the designer of the Sears
Tower, since renamed Willis Tower, the tallest building
in the world from 1973 until 1998 and the 100-story
John Hancock Center.

Avenues for Civil Engineering

Wonders in Construction
Beams – the horizontal members

What is the difference between a beam and a girder?

• The main difference between a girder and a
beam is the size of the component.
• In general, workers in the construction industry
refer to large beams as girders.

STRUCTURAL PRINCIPLES Columns – vertical

Within the context of the built environment, the term

'structure' refers to anything that is constructed or built
from different interrelated parts with a fixed location on
the ground. The structure is responsible for maintaining
the shape and form under the influence of subjected
forces.
