In the game of volleyball, the set is a maneuver in which a player quickly makes contact with the
ball in order to set up a spike for another player. The maneuver itself is simple, but can be a
difficult one to truly master. Most good spikes are a product of a good set, remember that in the
sport volleyball teamwork and coordination is a must.
Setting can be harder to get the hang of, but in the end it gives you more control. You can either
use setting as a pass or to send the ball to the hitter.
(A) Instructions
a. First, put your feet shoulder width and raise your arms over your head. Now, imagine you are
chugging a 2-liter of pop and holding it with your pointer fingers and thumbs. Those fingers
should be in a triangle or diamond shape.
b. When the ball is set, you want the ball to only touch the padding of your fingers, so if you
have weak fingers, you’ll want to make sure you don’t take any hard balls. When the ball comes
to you, have the ball rest on your fingers for a split second, bend your arms and knees, and then
push back. Your arms should be extended in the direction you want the ball to fly.
c. If you are setting to a hitter, you’ll want the ball to be high and in an arc position where the
ball lands a little bit to the far side of the hitter. Try to make the ball spin in air as little as
possible. Also, make sure to contact the ball as evenly as possible, not having your hands hit it
at different times.
d. In a more advanced scenario, you can do a shoot set, which is an attack set that faces a
more downward angle with more force.

(C) Drills
Here are a couple of drills you can perform!
a. Self-Setting
- Self setting is a drill where you set continuously. You set for 30 seconds,
repeating it for 1 minute, repeating the same process for another 30 seconds and
repeating it again for another minute.
b. Wall- Setting
- Using cone markers or empty pet bottles, mark the distance from the wall:
50cm, 100cm, and 150cm.
- Stand close to the wall (50cm) and perform the setting. The ball must hit the wall
and you must receive it with your fingers and set it back again towards the wall.
Do this for 10 consecutive sets. Make sure to do it continuously and do it with
pure sets, repeat the same process at the 100cm and 150cm mark. Lastly
perform 30 sets towards the wall while moving back little by little to the cone
markers.
