Inquiry Question?

How can we incorporate mindfulness in the classroom to benefit students?

How does incorporating mindfulness in the classroom benefit students?

Inquiry Process
We will be using the university database to find articles to see the benefit in mindfulness in the
school. We will then implement one strategy at a time and reflect on if we saw a change in the
attitude of our students or the outcome of a quiz or exam.

These are a few websites we have just skimmed over as we have not fully decided which ones to
base our ideas from.

Measures and Timeline
With our practicum having started already, and no research having been implemented yet, we
have a starting point. We can start to implement some of our findings come mid-October and try
some of the different strategies we read about. We can reflect on each of them and how they
benefited (or didn’t) our students. This will be tested at the kindergarten level and at the high
school level, so some strategies may work better for younger students, and some may work better
for older. We will reflect on these things and compare what we feel works best for each age
group.

Anticipated Impact
We have decided to look further into mindfulness as it is beneficial to every grade and to
ourselves as teachers as well.
Students, in the last couple years, have dealt with a lot of uncertainty and a lot of change
and for many of them, this has caused a lot of fear and stress. With this stress, it is important
to stay aware of your health and mental health. Students may not know how to be mindful or
how to breathe through emotions and therefore, it is important as teachers to help them
develop this ability to be mindful in the classroom. Mindfulness does not always mean
breathing, it can be things such as yoga, or movements, listening to music, or simply just
going for a walk. Each child will have a strategy that works better for them just as we have
strategies that work for us.
Within our project we are going to provide information about mindfulness and what it is, we
will provide links and resources talking about the benefits of this practice. We will also be
providing resources that teachers can use in the classroom. We see the importance in
providing materials for any teacher to easily take and make possible in their own
classrooms.
Lastly, we will be practicing mindfulness in our classrooms, and we will be reflecting  on the
difference in makes in our classes and the mood of our students. We will implement these
activities in our classrooms starting mid-October starts so that we have time to see the
influence of mindfulness on the students throughout the remainder of our practicum and
build our knowledge.
We hope that our students will see the benefit, although they may find it silly in the
beginning (at least at the high school level), of taking a minute to relax our breathing and
mind and be able to work at peace.
Our hope is that our colleagues may also see the benefit that comes of this and also
implement it into their classroom, if not for all the students, at least for those that we see a
big impact in.
All of this will be made into a Weebly website which will have clickable links for resources,
reflections, and lessons/activities.
