Interim Undergraduate Grading Policy (required for undergraduate courses)

Due to the unique and unprecedented challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, the
University of Houston has implemented an Interim Undergraduate Grade Policy for undergraduate
grades which applies to all undergraduate students in courses offered in all sessions during fall 2020.
Under this policy, students have the option of converting final assigned letter grades to S (Satisfactory,
applicable to any letter grade from A to D-) or NCR (No Credit Reported COVID-19, applicable to
grades of F) on their transcripts. Please visit FAQs for additional information.

Class Attendance and Participation

Class attendance is mandatory and will be monitored throughout the semester. If a student is unable to
attend the class due to illness, she/he must inform the instructor immediately. Participation in lectures is
strongly encouraged and will count in the final grade. You are expected to be in class by the start of the
class. Tardiness is not allowed. Late class arrivals will be excused only due to extenuating
circumstances

Excused Absence Policy

Regular class attendance, participation, and engagement in coursework are important contributors to
student success. Absences may be excused as provided in the University of Houston Undergraduate
Excused Absence Policy and Graduate Excused Absence Policy for reasons including: medical illness
of student or close relative, death of a close family member, legal or government proceeding that a
student is obligated to attend, recognized professional and educational activities where the student is
presenting, and University-sponsored activity or athletic competition. Additional policies address
absences related to military service, religious holy days, pregnancy and related conditions, and
disability.
Homework Assignments
The solutions to the homework assignments should be neatly prepared and all work must be clearly
presented for full credit.
Cheating in homework assignment will results in zero score in the assignment.
Homework assignments are due by the date/time specified, and must be submitted electronically on the
BlackBoard or by email. No late homework assignments will be accepted.

Exams
The dates of the exams will be determined in advance. The final examination day/time will follow the
university’s final examination calendar. Cheating in midterms or final results in F in the class.
Note: Makeup examinations will not be given; for excused absences, according to the UH’s policies and
with the proper documentation, a makeup examination will be provided at a first feasible opportunity.

Correction of Grading Errors

Grading mistakes/oversights for failing to examine all parts of a student’s solution, not recognizing an
alternative solution, or simply not adding up the points earned on all questions correctly should be
contested by the student within one week from the time he/she receives the grade. The instructor will
make every effort to address the student’s concerns and rectify grading mistakes. Note that correcting
grading errors does not include negotiating for points nor negotiating the amount of partial credit a part
of a question is due. Correction is for grading errors only.

Required Reading
Not assigned.

Recommended Reading
Gas Reservoir Engineering, by John Lee, 1996.

Course Materials
Course materials, including course syllabus, lectures, homework assignments, quizzes, exams,
solutions, additional class problems, handouts, textbook, etc., are created and solely distributed to the
students officially registered in the class following the University of Houston policies and requirements.
All these copyrighted soft and/or hard course materials should not be distributed under any
circumstances outside of either the course participants or outside the U. of Houston.

Electronic Equipment
The use of electronic equipment (cell phones, laptops, video and/or audio equipment, etc.) during class
is not permitted. No audio or video recording of any of the lectures is allowed.
Course Withdrawal
A student who wishes to withdraw from the course without receiving a grade should do so through
enrollment services and until the date specified in the academic calendar for each semester. After this
date and until the University's last day to drop a class for the semester as specified in the academic
calendar, a student may withdraw for the course receiving a W, if the student has not exceeded the total
W limit. The student should not assume that the instructor will withdraw him/her simply because the
student stopped attending the class. The student is responsible for completing the withdrawal procedure.

Academic Honesty
All students are expected to meet all ethical standards of the University of Houston as described in the
Student Handbook under “Academic Honesty”. In addition, all students are expected to meet all ethical
standards for the UH Cullen College of Engineering as described at
http://www.egr.uh.edu/academics/policies/academic-honesty.
As a further specific clarification, in this course all examinations and quizzes are to be completed
individually without exception. Collaboration on homework is allowed, but each student must submit
her/his own work for evaluation and grading. Identical submissions of homework by more than one
student are not allowed. Note: if you are not doing the work yourself, then you are not learning the
material. Students will be required to sign an honesty pledge on each exam.
In light of the high professional standards for ethical behavior required of all petroleum engineers, and
the potentially severe consequences to health, safety, and the environment of unethical behavior on the
part of a petroleum engineer, severe consequences will result from any ethical breech by a PETR
student, up to and including immediate expulsion from the program.

Resources for Online Learning

The University of Houston is committed to student success, and provides information to optimize the
online learning experience through our Power-On website. Please visit this website for a comprehensive
set of resources, tools, and tips including: obtaining access to the internet, AccessUH, and Blackboard;
requesting a laptop through the Laptop Loaner Program; using your smartphone as a webcam; and
downloading Microsoft Office 365 at no cost. For questions or assistance contact UHOnline@uh.edu.

Religious Holidays
Students whose religious beliefs prohibit class attendance on designated dates or attendance at
scheduled exams may request an excused absence. To do this, you are strongly encouraged to request
the excused absence in writing before the last day to drop without record for the semester. Please
submit this written request to your instructor immediately, to allow the instructor to make appropriate
arrangements. For more information, see the Student Handbook. In any event, request must be
received by the instructor 14 calendar days in advance of the day for which the absence is being
requested.
Recording of Class
Students may not record all or part of class, livestream all or part of class, or make/distribute screen
captures, without advanced written consent of the instructor. If you have or think you may have a
disability such that you need to record class-related activities, please contact the Center for Students
with DisABILITIES. If you have an accommodation to record class-related activities, those recordings
may not be shared with any other student, whether in this course or not, or with any other person or on
any other platform. Classes may be recorded by the instructor. Students may use instructor’s recordings
for their own studying and notetaking. Instructor’s recordings are not authorized to be shared
with anyone without the prior written approval of the instructor. Failure to comply with requirements
regarding recordings will result in a disciplinary referral to the Dean of Students Office and may result
in disciplinary action.

Webcams
Access to a webcam is required for students participating remotely in this course. Webcams must be
turned on during exams to ensure the academic integrity of exam administration.

Students with Disabilities

The University of Houston System complies with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the
Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, pertaining to the provision of reasonable academic
adjustments/auxiliary aids for students who have a disability. In accordance with Section 504 and ADA
guidelines, the University of Houston strives to provide reasonable academic
adjustments/auxiliary aids to students who request and require them. If you believe that you have a
disability requiring an academic adjustments/auxiliary aid, please contact the Center for Students with
Disabilities at http://www.uh.edu/csd/.
Students with recognized disabilities will be provided reasonable accommodations, appropriate to the
course, upon documentation of the disability with a Student Accommodation Form from the Center for
Students with Disabilities. To receive these accommodations, you must request the specific
accommodations, by submitting them to the instructor in writing by the last day to drop without record.
If a student is first granted accommodations by the Center for Students with Disabilities after this
deadline, the student shall provide notice to the instructor at least 14 days in advance of the date for
which the accommodation is being requested. Providing the accommodation notification of the day of a
test, for example, does not provide reasonable time for the instructor to accommodate the request. For
more information, please see the Student Handbook.
Policy Acknowledgment
Officially enrolled class student must sign and submit to your instructor this acknowledgment of the course
policies. If you fail to do this by the third class session, you will be dropped from the course.
