Educational Product/Software Selected: Lesson Plan: Harvest (Science - Grade K)

Web Address to the Product/Software:

https://www.educationworld.com/a_lesson/subplans/harvest-science-grK

Publisher: Education World

Grade Level: Kindergarten

Provide a brief description of the product/software: Use science to teach students about

different locations to grow vegetables! Prompt and support students to ask and answer questions

about key details in a text.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of the product/software? Strengths: It is free, it

provides speech outlines for options on what to say as the teacher and how to give feedback to

the students, and it provides which Common Core Standard the product adheres to. Weaknesses:

The worksheet itself isn’t very substantial. It’s hard to imagine it serving as lesson material for

longer than a few days.

Is the product/software easy for you and the students to use? Explain. Yes, it’s extremely

easy for me as the teacher to navigate, and all of the hyperlinks are convenient. The lesson for

the students has a very simple and straightforward layout, and the instructions are easy to

understand.

Does the software serve its intended purpose, which is classroom use? Explain. Certainly.

The worksheet is designed to be printed out and used by students, and with the instructions

provided to the teacher, it makes for a very neat science lesson.

Are there multiple forms of media (audio, video, and textual communication channels) that

encourage the student to engage with the software? Explain. Since this is a simple worksheet,

there is no supporting media to go alongside it. All of the needed instructions are sufficed by the

written instruction provided. However, it would be very easy to implement media from other

online sources into the lesson plan.

Is the documentation for the product/software, such as technical support, instructions on

how to use the product, and hardware requirements presented clearly on the website?

Explain. Yes, very clear. In fact, there are no extraneous words on the website. As it is a

straightforward procedure-- open the link and print the worksheet-- there is no need for technical

support to be written on the page.

Is the software adaptable to support specific accessibility needs of learners with

disabilities? Explain. If there are specific accessibility needs, there is a large category

specifically for Special Education and Guidance. With such support, there is no reason for

special needs students to be left out of lesson plans!

Does the software program give appropriate feedback to responses (assessment)?

Can the skill levels be adjusted by the student/instructor? Explain. Yes. In fact, the program

provides verbatim suggestions of what you, as the teacher, can say to your students to provide

feedback and provides a list of responses you can use to teach the lesson more deeply. I find this

to be one of the most attractive features of Education World.

Name of the Website: ABCya!

Educational Product/Software Selected: Number Ninja

Web Address to the Product/Software:

https://www.abcya.com/games/number_ninja_odd_even

Publisher: ABCya!

Grade Level: Grades 1-2

Provide a brief description of the product/software: Number Ninja is a mathematical spinoff

of the popular app, Fruit Ninja. The player selects either even or odd numbers for their

gamemode, then their objective is to only slice the even or only slice the odd numbers.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of the product/software? Strengths: attractive visual

design and easy-to-understand instructions. The game itself is also fun, which promotes

continual eagerness in the students to play the game and thereby learn their even and odd

numbers. Weaknesses: There is no adjustable difficulty level. This could be an obstacle

preventing the less advanced children from playing, and it can easily become obsolete to the

students who advance past it.

Is the product/software easy for you and the students to use? Explain. Yes. The mechanics of

the game are so straightforward that a tutorial is not even required! All that is required in order

for the student to play the game is a cursor (mouse). It’s just as easy for the teacher to use.

Does the software serve its intended purpose, which is classroom use? Explain.

Yes it does have its place in classroom use, but it cannot serve as a standalone lesson plan.

Instead, this game should be treated as supplemental teaching for instilling even and odd

numbers into the students. It would also serve as a wonderful “computer time” game!
Are there multiple forms of media (audio, video, and textual communication channels) that

encourage the student to engage with the software? Explain. ABCya!’s website provides

many other games, organized by grade level and subject, that can be played as well as Number

Ninja to teach number concepts to students. The site also provides printables, including coloring

pages, activity pages, worksheets, and teacher resources which encourage engagement with the

software.

Is the documentation for the product/software, such as technical support, instructions on

how to use the product, and hardware requirements presented clearly on the website?

Explain. Yes. ABCYa! has an entire menu tab designated for help/FAQs, covering just about

every technical support question and instruction possible.

Is the software adaptable to support specific accessibility needs of learners with

disabilities? Explain. No, in the sense that there is no category specifically tailored for students

with special educational needs. However, with such a wide range of subjects and grade level

material provided, it does leave room for the teacher to tailor what proficiency level the student

with learning disabilities may learn from.

Does the software program give appropriate feedback to responses (assessment)?

Can the skill levels be adjusted by the student/instructor? Explain.

The educational games generally do provide a score at the end but don’t generally provide a

specific assessment response or feedback. And the individual educational games cannot have

their difficulty levels altered, but it is worth recognizing that they’re categorized according to

grade level. With this, the student or instructor can deliberately select either easier or harder

games for the student to play.
