A. Use inductive reasoning to determine the next three terms in the list of numbers below.

1. 50, 25, 0, -25, -50, -75 , -100 , -125

Subtract -25 to the preceding number. The next three terms are -75, -100, -125
2. 2, 7, 12, 17, 22, 27 , 32 , 37
Add 5 to the preceding number. The next three terms are 27, 32, 37
3. 50, 100, 200, 350, 550, 800 , 1100 , 1450
Add 50 to the second term, add 100 to the third term, add 150 to the fourth term, add 200 to
the fifth term, add 250 to the sixth term, add 300 to the seventh term then add 350 to the
eighth term.
4. -14, 12, -2, 10, 8, _____, _____, _____
5. 2/3, 11/3, 20/3, 29/3, 38/3, 47/3 , 56/3 , 65/3
Add 9 to the preceding number without displacing the /3 right section. The next three terms are
47/3, 56/3, 65/3.

B. Support the conjecture inductively by showing example.

1. The product of an odd integer and an even integer is an odd integer.

The product of an odd integer and an even integer is an even integer not an odd integer.

7 x 8 = 56

2. Think of a number. Add it to 5, multiply 2 and then subtract 7. What is the result?

8 + 5 x 2 - 7 = 19

3. The product of and odd number and its consecutive number is an even number.

5 x 6 = 30

4. Positive numbers whose last digit is zero is divisible by 10.

30
30 ÷ 10 = 3

Assignment in Deductive Reasoning.

A. Complete the following:
1. In order to get a student driver’s license, a person must be 16 years old. Rowena will be
16 years old in two days.

Conclusion: Therefore, she will get or receive her student driver’s license in two days.

2. Employees have a “wash” day every Wednesday to allow them to wash their office
clothes. Today is Wednesday>

Conclusion: Therefore, they are allowed to wash their office clothes today.

3. All humans are rational. I am a human.

Conclusion: Therefore, I am rational.

4. All tangible materials are destined to depreciate. A car is a tangible material.

Conclusion: Therefore, it is destined to depreciate.

5. All students are eligible to be in the dean’s list. Isabel is a student.

Conclusion: Therefore, she is eligible to be in the dean’s list.

B. Solve the following completely.

1. 3x + 8(x – 1) = 47
3x + 8x − 8 = 47
11x − 8 = 47
11x = 47 + 8
11 x 55
=
11 11
x=5
1
2. (x + 2) = 5(x + 2)
2
1
x (x + 2) - 5(x + 2) = 0
2
¿ −5 ¿ x (x +2)=0
9
− x (x + 2) = 0
2
X+2=0
X = −2

3. -2x – 1 ≤ -9
- 2x ≤ - 9 + 1
- 2x ≤ - 8
x≥

4. Fifty-four less than 4 times a number is equal to the number. What is the number?
Let x = the number
4x - 54 = x the number = 18
4x = x + 54
4x - x = 54
3 x 54
=
3 3
x = 18

5. Two planes fly toward each other. They are 3500 kilometers apart. They pass each other
after 7.5 hours. If their speeds differ by 65 kilometers per hour what are their speeds?

Let x = speeds x + 65 km/h = speeds

15 x 3012.5
7.5x + 7.5 ( x + 65) = 3500 =
15 15
1205
7.5x + 7.5x + 487.5 = 3500 x =
6
15x + 487.5 = 3500 or x = 200. 83 km/h = speed
15x = 3500 - 487.5 and 200.83 + 65 = 265.83 km/h = speed
