LABORATORY WORK NO.

5: DETERMINATION OF SURFACE MOISTURE

OF COARSE AGGREGATES

OBJECTIVE:

To cover a test procedure for determining, in the field, the amount of surface moisture in
coarse aggregates by displacement in water. The accuracy of the method depends upon accurate
information of the bulk specific gravity of the material in the saturated surface dry condition of the coarse
aggregate.

REFERENCE:

a. ASTM C 70-73
b. AASHTO Manual

ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS:

1. Dry-coarse aggregate
2. #4 and the 3/8” sieve
3. balance
4. flask (tin can)
5. tamping rod
6. pan and trowel

TESTING PROCEDURE:

1. The surface water content may be determined either by weight or by volume. In each
case the test shall be made at a temperature range of 18 to 29 degrees Celcius.

2. DETERMINATION BY WEIGHT- Fill the container to the mark with water, and
determine the weight in grams. Empty the container. Set the container to dry condition.
Fill the container by layer with aggregate. With the use of tamping rod, apply 25 strokes
for every layer until the can is filled to the marked. Determine the weight of the sample.

3. With the sample still in the can, fill the container with water until the original mark,
removed the entrained air, and determine the weight in grams.

4. Calculate the amount of water as displaced by the sample, as follows:

Vs = Wc + Ws – W

Where: Vs = weight of water as displaced by the sample

Wc = weight of water
Ws = weight of sample
W = weight of sample with water

DATA AND RESULTS:

a. Weight of water in the container, Wc = 843.51 – 62.32 = 781.19gms

b. Weight of sample in the container, Ws = 1389.89 – 62.32 = 1327.57gms

c. Weight of sample with water, W = 2143.87 – 62.32 = 2081.55gms

d. Bulk Specific Gravity of the Sample: SG=______________

e. Absorption of the sample: Pa = ______________________%

f. Weight of water as displaced by the sample, Vs = 781.19 + 1327.57 – 2081.55 =

27.21gms

g. Percentage of surface moisture in terms of the SSD condition, P = _________%

h. Percentage of surface moisture in terms of the Dry condition, Pd = ________%

i. Total moisture content, on dry basis, Pt = ___________%

CALCULATIONS:

a. P = [(Vs – Vd) / (Ws – Vs )] x 100%

b. Vd = mass of the sample (Ws) divided by the bulk specific gravity of the coarse aggregate in the SSD
condition.

c. Pd = P [ 1 + ( Pa / 100 ) ]

d. Pt = Pd + Pa
