OBJECTIVE:
To cover a test procedure for determining, in the field, the amount of surface moisture in
coarse aggregates by displacement in water. The accuracy of the method depends upon accurate
information of the bulk specific gravity of the material in the saturated surface dry condition of the coarse
aggregate.
REFERENCE:
a. ASTM C 70-73
b. AASHTO Manual
1. Dry-coarse aggregate
2. #4 and the 3/8” sieve
3. balance
4. flask (tin can)
5. tamping rod
6. pan and trowel
TESTING PROCEDURE:
1. The surface water content may be determined either by weight or by volume. In each
case the test shall be made at a temperature range of 18 to 29 degrees Celcius.
2. DETERMINATION BY WEIGHT- Fill the container to the mark with water, and
determine the weight in grams. Empty the container. Set the container to dry condition.
Fill the container by layer with aggregate. With the use of tamping rod, apply 25 strokes
for every layer until the can is filled to the marked. Determine the weight of the sample.
3. With the sample still in the can, fill the container with water until the original mark,
removed the entrained air, and determine the weight in grams.
Vs = Wc + Ws – W
CALCULATIONS:
b. Vd = mass of the sample (Ws) divided by the bulk specific gravity of the coarse aggregate in the SSD
condition.
c. Pd = P [ 1 + ( Pa / 100 ) ]
d. Pt = Pd + Pa
