Module in Science and Technology and Society

I. Short Introduction

Science Technology and Society is an essential course in the General Education for tertiary
education. It was conceptualize to develop deep application and critical understanding of the role of
science and technology in the development of people and the society. It deals with the interactions
between science and technology in social, cultural, political and economic context. It is an
interdisciplinary cause whereby students are engaged in learning myriad of scientific issues and
technological developments.

The students are expected to broaden their theoretical and practical understanding of STS as a
course and a field of study. It leads the students to acknowledge the science and that science and
society are inseparable. The development of scientific ideas draws inspiration from the physical and
natural world, and the society is always a recipient of the positive benefits of Science and
Technology.

II. Objectives

At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:

1. Discuss how the ideas postulated by Copernicus, Darwin and Freud contributed to the spark
of scientific revolution.
2. Analyze how scientific revolution is done in various parts of the world like in Latin America,
East Asia, Middle East and Africa.

Additional Objectives

3. Discuss the role of Science and Technology in the Philippine nation building.
4. Evaluate government policies pertaining to science and technology in terms of their
contribution to Nation Building.
5. Discuss the concept of science education.
6. Discuss the contribution of indigenous science in the development of science and technology
in the Philippines.

III. Title of the Lesson

Lesson 1 – Intellectual Revolution that define Society.


Lesson 2 – Science Technology and Nation Building.

Lesson 3 – Science Education in the Philippines.

Lesson 4 – Indigenous Science and Technology in the Philippines.
