Concept Notes
In this lesson, we will discuss about passive and active voice. Are you
ready? Let’s get on!
How to identify whether it is in the active or passive voice?
The answer is, when the subject does or “acts upon” the verb, the
sentence is said to be in the active voice. When the subject receives the
action of the verb, the sentence is said to be in the passive voice.
What do we mean by "voice"?
A voice of a verb tells us whether the subject of a sentence does the
action (= the active voice) or is affected by it (= the passive voice).
Examples:
• Given this sentence, "Yaell climbed the tree”, the verb "climbed" is in the
active voice. In other words, the form "climbed" shows that the subject
(Yaell) did the active voice. This what makes the sentence "Yaell climbed
the tree" in the active voice.
• While in this sentence, "The tree was climbed by Yaell," the verb "was
climbed" is in the passive voice. In other words, the form "was climbed"
shows that the subject (The tree) was affected by the action. This what
makes also the sentence "The tree was climbed by Yaell" in the passive
voice.

The active voice is commonly used in writing. It occurs when the subject
comes first before the verb and the subject is the one doing the action of the
sentence. The passive voice, however, focus attention on the person or
thing affected by the action. When a passive voice takes two objects, an
indirect or direct object, the indirect object becomes the subject, but we can
also use the direct object as the subject. Both two forms are possible.

Let us examine again these examples. Notice that the subject is doing the
action. These sentences are in the active voice.
• John gives a present to the little boy. (subject) (verb)
• Carlos Bulosan revealed the reality about social discrimination. (subject)
(verb)
• The old man accused the poor family of stealing the spirit of his (subject)
(verb) family’s food by smelling.
• The judge pounded the gravel. (subject) (verb)
• My brothers threw a small change in a straw hat. (subject) (verb) Here are
other set of sentences. The subject of the sentence this time receives the
action of the verb. These sentences are in the passive voice.
• The money is thrown in the garbage can. ( active verb – throws: passive
verb – is thrown )
• The unexpected ending was shown in the story. ( active verb – shown :
passive verb – was shown
• The essay was written by my son. (active verb – written : passive verb –
was written
• A small change was deleted in the file of my computer. (active verb –
deleted : passive verb – was deleted

Active and Passive Voice Comparison

In the following examples of sentences, you’ll start to become an
active voice expert.
Be guided with this formula in forming your sentences.
Subject + verb + object Object + verb +subject
Active Voice Passive Voice
We are going to watch a A movie is going to be
movie tonight. watched by us tonight.

Harry ate six shrimp at At dinner, six shrimps were

dinner. eaten by Harry.

Remember: A sentence emphasizing the subject performing an

action is in active voice while a sentence emphasizing the action
or the object of the sentence is in passive voice

Once you have identified which voice a sentence is in, you can follow
several steps to revise it into the other voice.
