3 Talking About future ( Pertemuan 1 )

A. Talking About future


There are three ways of talking about future in English.
1. Using “be going to”
We use “be going to” when we are sure about our future plans ( the decision we made
earlier and intention.
Examples: a. I’m going to study English tomorrow.
b. Are you going to go picnic tomorrow?
c. I’m not going to go picnic tomorrow.
2. Using “be + V-ing” ( Present Continuous Tense )
We may use Present continuous tense when we have already made arrangement (fixed
plan)’ It usually involves other people and specific times and places.
Examples: a. We are leaving this town next Sunday.
b. Are you leaving this town next Sunday?
c. We are not leaving this town next Sunday.
3. Using “: will “
We usually use “will” when we are not sure about the future, a spontaneous decision
(while we are speaking) and prediction.
Examples: a. I think I will go shopping tomorrow.
b. I will visit your new house when I am free.
c. Will You visit my house?
d. I will not go shopping tomorrow.

There are some social functions of using future tense.


1. To tell or explain future events.
Example: The performance will end at 10 o’clock.
2. To express promise or convince someone.
Example: We will not do it again.
3. To report statements about the future.
Example: They have promised us that they will come back.

B. Future Tenses.
Future tense expresses a future event or a future state of being. Future tense can be
categorized further depending on whether the action will be in progress or will be
completed, so there are four types of future tenses. They are simple future tense,
future continuous tense, future perfect tense and future perfect continuous tense.

1. Simple future tense ( will + Simple )


It is used for an action that will occur in the future. The actions are not yet
begun.

Form : (+) Subject + will + infinitive ( Verb in base form )


( - ) Subject + will + not + infinitive ( Verb in base form )
Function: to express
a. Spontaneous decision ( a decision at the moment of speaking )
Example: I’ll go home at once.
b. Prediction
Example: (I think) It will rain tomorrow.
c. Expectation
Example: (I hope) she will get better.
d. Willingness
Example: I will take the book for you.
e. Promise
Example: I’ll return your money next week.
f. Condition
Example: if you heat ice, it will melt.
g. Invitation
Example: will you come to my party?

2. Future Continuous Tense ( will + continuous )

Form: (+) Subject + will + be + Verb-ing


(-) Subject + will not + be + Verb-ing

Function: to express
a. Predicted or planned events that start at some predicted time in the future and are
still occurring at a given time in the future.
Example: -. I will be watching television at 8 tomorrow night.
- By this time next week, I will be doing my exam.
b. Predictions or guess.
Example: I guess she will be coming to my party.
I will be visiting him next month.
We often use the following time signal:
a. At this time (tomorrow)
b. By this time (next week)
c. At the same time (next month)
d. At(8)0’clock tomorrow night
e. This time next week

3. Future perfect tense. (will+ perfect )


It is used to describe an action that will have been completed at some points in the future.
It means we look at events or actions from a point in the future after we expect the event
or action to have already visited.

Form: (+) Subject + will + have + Past participle (Verb 3 )


(-) Subject + will not + have + Past participle (Verb 3 )
We usually use time signal in future perfect tense, such as “ by the end of”, “when”, ”by
the time (you arrive )
Function: to express
a. In action that will happen before another action in the future.
Example: By the time I get home, mother will have cooked lunch for us.
b. An action that will happen before a specific time in the future.
Example: The snow will have stopped by April.
c. A state that will continue up to some time in the future.
Example: we will have joined the course three months tomorrow.
