Sample Problems in Lecture File For Bearing Capacity

This document contains 5 problems related to calculating bearing capacity of different types of footings in soil: 1) Determine allowable load and bearing capacity of a continuous footing considering general shear failure. 2) Calculate allowable load of a square footing considering general shear failure. 3) Find ultimate and allowable bearing pressure of a circular footing assuming local shear failure. 4) Compute ultimate bearing capacity of a strip footing assuming local shear failure and allowable capacity under general shear failure. 5) Calculate soil properties and bearing capacity factors for a sandy soil given its cohesion and Nq value.

1) A continuous footing with cohesion of 19.15kPa is shown in figure.

Use Terzaghi’s
Bearing Capacity factors considering general shear failure to determine:
a) Gross allowable load per unit area the footing can carry.
b) Net allowable bearing capacity with factor of safety equal to four.
c) Gross allowable bearing capacity with factor of safety equal to four with
respect to local shear failure.

2) A square footing carries an allowable load of 59130kg including its own weight.
The bottom of footing is 1.0m below ground surface and water table coincide with
bottom of footing. Assume General shear failure.
3) A circular footing having a diameter of 1.2m has its bottom at a depth of 2.7m
from the ground surface. Water table is located at a depth of 1.3m below the
ground. Soil has the ff. properties.
Dry unit weight = 18.1kn/cum
Saturated unit weight = 19.3kn//cum
C = 15.74kpa
Angle of internal friction = 20deg

a) Assuming local shear failure, find ultimate bearing pressure using terzaghi’s
equation
b) Det. Allowable bearing capacity using a factor of safety of 3.
c) Find allowable load on footing.

4) A strip footing is to be placed 2m below the surface of soil having a cohesion of

40kpa, unit weight of 18.2kn/cum and angle of friction of 10deg.
Nc=9.61 Nq=2.69 Ny=0.56
Nc’=8.02 Nq’=1.94 Ny’=0.24
a) Assuming local shear failure, compute the ultimate bearing capcity of footing
if width is 1.25m
b) Considering a rectangular footing of 1.25mx6m and a load factor of 2.5,
determine allowable bearing capacity under general shear failure

5) A sandy soil having a cohesion of 24kPa has a bearing capacity factor Nq=14.72
a) Compute the value of the angle of internal friction of the sandy soil
b) Compute the value of bearing capacity factor Nc.
c) Compute the value of the bearing capacity factor Ny.
