E. Exercises/Activities:
3.1 To fully experience Filipino Literature, read the short story “Dead Stars” by Paz Benitez Marquez
[http://notes.dlszobel.edu.ph/files/2013-2014/DEAD%20STARS.pdf] . After this, answer the
following guide questions in no more than five sentences each. 20 pts
1. Why do you think the title of the story is “Dead Stars”? How is the title connected to the events
and/or the theme of the story?
Dead stars represent a dream for something that does not exist at all. The guy adored the girl; she
was his dream, his star. He believed there was love there. But, like a dead star so far away that its
brightness could be the remaining traveling light from it, he was a long way from reaching the girl,
and the love he imagined was conceivable was never realized. In this case, the person in the story
desired to be loved by someone she had no idea existed. She was always wishing and hoping for
him to be with her so she could be loved and loved back. But it never comes because the girl he
dreamed about remained a dream that he would never realize. It's like a dead star that doesn't
twinkle in the sky, but it exists just like the other star, but its light fades and disappears with time. It
was like a relationship that gave us happiness and freedom at first, but there comes a time when the
love we hoped to flourish didn't come back as we expected.
2. Given that the piece was written and published during the American Colonial Period, can you
enumerate at least three characteristics of Literature in that period found in the story?
The Three characteristics of Literature in that period found in the story is Symbolism, Romanticism
and Surrealism.
3. Looking at Julia and Esperanza, what could they possibly symbolize in Alfredo’s life? Is
Alfredo’s dilemma merely about choosing between the two women?
For me, Alfredo’s life is a “mess” because he had to choose one of the women he loves. That’s why
it’s a mess because it is hard to pick if both women love you. I believe “mess” was used here as a
phrase rather than a circumstance to indicate the confusion he found himself within. These are some
of the drawbacks of extended engagements; waiting can sometimes dilute the purpose of being
engaged. Doubts can arise in a monotonous state, especially if a new acquaintance is likable.
4. What can you say about the denouement of the story? Do you like it? Was it a satisfying
conclusion to the story of Alfredo and Julia?
Dead Star- symbolizes Alfredo's dream of romance with Julia. He believed he saw love, but it was
nothing more than a star, the radiance of which could be the remaining traveling light. The story
concludes with Alfredo getting engaged to Esperanza but still having affections for Julia Salas. The
Dead Star can end in one of two ways. Alfredo and Julia's love appeared genuine, but upon closer
inspection, one can see that it was barely mutual and that it was doomed to fail.
