Bed making

Introduction- The primary aims of bed making is to be provide comfort and safety of the patient,
e.g. using pillows for support; preventing bed-sores by means of clean smooth sheets. The morale of
the patient is greatly helped by good bed making. It makes economy of time, effort and equipment,
e.g. being prepared for an emergency admission; using rubber sheeting to prevent soiling of linen,
mattress and pillow. It also gives cleanliness, order and pleasing appearance to patient’s unit.

DEFINITION OF BEDD MAKING:-

“Bed making is a process of keeping the bed clean neat and tidy also keep ready for admission,
transfer, examination, treatment, and to promote comfort the patient.”

PURPOSE OF BED MAKING:-

 To provide clean and comfortable bed for the patient


 To give neat tidy appearance to the unit
 To keep it ready for any emergency
 To receive patient comfortably
 To establish inter-personal relationship
 To economize the time, material and energy
 To prevent bed sore

PRINCIPALS OF BEDMAKING:-

 Systematic way of doing save time., energy and material.


 Good body mechanics maintains the body alignment and prevents fatigue.
 A safe and comfortable bed will ensure rest , sleep and Prevents several complications in
bed ridden patient , e.g. pressure sore, foot drop, etc.
 Microorganism are found everywhere on bed, bed sheets, blanket, pillow cover and the
articles used by the Patient and in the environment.
 Keep the bed and environment clean and neat. It helps to provide physical and mental
health.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS/RULES TO BE OBSERVED IN BED MAKING:-

 Wash hand before and after procedure.


 Do not expose the patient unnecessarily.
 Do not cover the patients face while placing the linen.
 Does not mix clean linen with soiled linen.
 Maintain good body mechanics.
 Make the bed firm, smooth and unwrinkled.
 Practice economy of time, energy and material.
 Nursing principles such as individuality,, comfort, safety and good workmanship should
be kept in mind during the bed making.
 Inspect the cot, mattress and pillows daily for the purpose of vermin’s and destroy them
if found on the bed.
 Always get extra help to make a bed for helpless patient and prevent from falling.
 Make adaptations according to climatic differences, individual needs, customs and
habits of the patient.
 The cotton mattress must be turned, aired and made free from lumps and creases.
PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT:-
 The doctor’s order for specific precautions regarding movement and positioning of the
patient.
 Assess the patient’s ability for self- care.
 The furniture and linen available in the patient unit.
 The number of the clean linen needed.
 Assess the articles needed for the comfort f the patient ,e.g. blankets, etc.

PREPARATION OF ARTICLES WITH RATIONAL:-

1.OPEN BED –

DEFINITION-
Preparing a bed that is
comfortable and
suitable for a hospitalized
patient. an open bed is a bed
to which a client is already
assigned.

Purpose-
 To provide comfort
and rest
 To maintain a clean
environment and neat appearance to the unit
 To reduce transmission of microorganisms
 To economized time , material and effort
 To promote cleanliness
 To observe patient and to prevent complication
 To ambulate the patient
 To provide smooth , wrinkle free bed thus minimizing sources of skin irritation

GENERAL INSTRCTION-
 Unnecessary exposure of the patient should be avoided
 Appropriate measures should be ensured to protect patient from drought
 Clean linen should not be mixed with soiled linen
 Good body mechanic should be employed all through the procedure
 Ensure that patient `s body is not in direct contact with woolen blanket and mackintosh
 While making the bed ensure that the soiled or clean linen do not touch the uniform the
nurse
 The bed should be firm , smooth , clean and wrinkle free
 Necessary modification should be done according to change in weather and individual need ,
comfort , safety

2. CLOSED BED:
DEFINITION - IT is an unoccupied /empty bed to receive the patient and fully covered with
counter pane to protect it from dust and dirt on admission of the patient, the closed bed is
converted into open bed. To ma a close bed , the top covers are pulled up to the head of the
bed over the bottom covers.

PURPOSES:-
1) To keep the bed ready for occupancy/admission.
2) To provide a neat and tidy appearance to the unit.
3) To give a clean comfortable of bed.
4) To keep it ready for any emergency.
5) To protect the bed from dust and dirt.

OCCUPIED BED-

DEFINITION-Occupied the bed is making a comfortable bed when patient is unable to get out of the
bed. It is usually done by two persons.

Purpose-

 To provide a neat and clean bed.


 To refresh the patient who is confined to
the bed.
 To change the linen with the least possible
disturbance to the patient.
 To draw or fix the sheets under the
patients very firmly so that it would not
wrinkle.
 To remove crumbs from the bed.
 To make the patient feel comfortable.

Equipment of Occupied Bed Making:


The below equipment is very important for occupied bed making:

1. Bed or cot,
2. Mattress with cover,
3. Bed sheet -2,
4. Pillowcase -1 or 2,
5. 1 Protective sheet and cotton draw sheet,
6. Mackintosh-1,
7. Paper bag,
8. Chair-1,
9. Bucket-1.
