Controlled burns can encourage change in biomes, stop wildfires from spreading, and improve wildlife habitats by promoting new plant growth.

Controlled burns can encourage regeneration of fire-resistant plant species, stop the spread of wildfires, and improve wildlife habitats by promoting new plant growth.

Controlled burns reduce fuel for wildfires by removing dead plant material. This makes it harder for wildfires to ignite and spread unexpectedly.

Controlled Fires

To this day, Fires have continuously been a fundamental part of the environment.

For most people, however, a forest fire is synonymous with disaster regardless of the fact

that there are some kinds of fires that truly benefit the environment. One type of fire

being a Controlled fire or a prescribed burn. This technique, commonly called

backburning, involves intentionally sparking fires for scientific purposes and to maintain

the health of a forest or another wild area. Controlled fires help to encourage change in

biomes, stop wildfires, and improve wildlife habitats, consequently promoting healthier

wildlife. The use of fire plays an indispensable role in maintaining certain ecosystems

and is seen as one of the most prominent and natural means of environmental change.

To begin, the utilization of a controlled burn helps to encourage change in forest biomes.

Unbeknownst to most, some species of plants and trees are dependent on the presence of

fire for their survival. Common wild areas rely on at least one forest fire every 3-25 years

in order to continue preserving life. Although the heat from a fire can damage some of

the trees and plants in the forest, there are some wildlife species that have fire-resistant or

encouraging qualities. Flammable resins that reside within various plant leaves and

fire-resistant bark fall into this category, along with cones as they require the heat to

open, which then releases their seeds to allow for reproduction. Periodic forest fires can

be provided through prescribed burns to allow countless species to flourish into new

generations.

Following that, controlled burns can also aid in stopping wildfires. According to Smithsonian

magazine, "In total, almost 150 million trees have died in California since the drought

began." This is in reference to the drought that plagued California from December 2011

to the beginning of 2019, killing many of the trees in the central and southern Sierra

Nevada mountains. Since so much wildlife can be damaged from infestation and drought

alone, that means there is a threat for wildfires even when it isn’t the fire season. Things

such as arson, human carelessness, and lightning can also cause wildfires, so, in order to

counter this issue, removing fuel helps prevent spontaneous and uncontrolled fires from

ravaging wild areas. By backburning a forest and consuming the dead and dying

materials, it becomes impossible for a fire to ignite at a moment’s notice.

Lastly, controlled fires also help improve wildlife habitats. A controlled burn is perhaps the best

device for improving wildlife territory in prairies, grasslands, and pine-ruled timberlands

and forests. Many kinds of herbaceous plants experience a flush of new growth and

development following the flames. This new growth supplies the grazing and browsing

wildlife with a much more nutritious palate selection. Plants such as shrubs, seeds,

flowers, and fruit increase in production alongside many beneficial insects, which draw in

more birds and game. Though sometimes overlooked, forest vegetation is an important

component of the environment for natural life and, thanks to prescribed burns, can be

enhanced for further wildlife progression.

To wrap things up, controlled fires can be pivotal tools in protecting and improving wild areas.

Controlled fires offer assistance in stimulating change in biomes, avoiding untamed forest

fires, and progressing wildlife habitats, therefore increasing more advantageous natural

life. Despite the disadvantages of fire, the benefits given to wildlife outweigh the many

risks. When used correctly, fire can become a tool for conservation and growth, to make

way for the forests of the future.
