Music of Mindoro
Off the coast of Luzon and the northeast of Palawan is where the island of Mindoro is
located. This island is the seventh largest island of the Philippines. Mindoro, formerly
called "Mait," was known to the Chinese traders even before the coming of the Spanish.
In 1570, the Spanish began to explore the island and named it Mina de Oro, meaning
"mine of gold," after finding some of the precious metal, though no major discoveries
were made. The Mangyan is the indigenous group living in Mindoro. It is composed of
different subgroups: Iraya, Tadyawan, Alangan, Batangan, Buhid, and Hanunoo. For
the Mangyans, music is a part of their ordinary and festive occasions.
Musical Instruments
Subing or kinaban -a bamboo jaw's harp. It is played by putting your lips and
plucking the slightly pointed end. It is also known as kubing. Other indigenous
groups such as Tboli, Ifugao, and Maranao also have their own version of subing.
Gitgit -a type of indigenous violin with three to four strings made of human hair.
Agong -a gong is a set of two wide-rimmed, vertically suspended gongs also used
by the Maguindanao, Maranau, and 'Tausug people ot the PhiliPpines as a
supportive instrument in kulintang ensemble.
Music of the Mangyan of Mindoro
The music of the Mangyan is characterized by its chanting song style called ambahan. It
is monophonic in texture and has no specific tone style. Basically, it is made up of seven
syllables in one line.
The ambahan ranges from 3-134 lines expressed in an allegorical manner. The ambahan
means to encourage the parents in guiding their children, in expressing their love to
them, and in sharing valuable experiences that can be applied to their day-to-day living.
The lyrics of the ambahan are written in a bamboo tube called luka as a means to
preserve their music.
The Mangyans are described as hanunuo which means "true or genuine" because they
have remained faithful to their traditions. They possess a system of writing which is a
descendant of the ancient Sanskrit alphabet. This form of writing is used to compose the
chanted poetry ambahan.
Mangyan music is used for courting, merrymaking, relaxing, and worshipping. The vocal
style used is leader-chorus type and is often accompanied by musical instruments.
Examples of Mangyan songs include:
Musical instruments like the kudiyapi, gitgit, and wind instruments are played to
accompany the ambahan, which is sometimes used as a tool for courting women.
The gongs of Mindoro are used to accompany the festive hanunuo music. These are
smaller and lighter suspended gongs with bosses facing each other. The rhythm or the
gongs together with the other instruments is used to accompany the ambahan and the
post-harvest of merrymaking.
The Mangyan musical instruments are classified into three sections: String instruments
or chordophones, wind instrument or aerophones, and percussion instruments or
idiophones. These instruments are played in various festivities, rituals, and daily
activities. The xylophones, drums, bamboos, or sticks are used for improvisation of
accompaniments. The following are examples of Mangyan musical instruments:
