concrete-filled steel tubes (CFTS) are composite members consisting of an steel tube infilled with concrete. in
current international practice, cft columns are used in the primary lateral resistance systems of both braced and
unbraced building structures.
concrete-filled double-skin steel tubes consist of two concentric steel tubes, an outer and an inner, with concrete
sandwiched between them and a void at their centre. the outer and inner tubes can either have the same or different
cross-sections, e.g. circular-circular, circular-square etc. having recently been introduced for construction
purposes, double-skin columns belong to the family of composite columns and therefore combine the best
qualities of both steel and concrete. these columns are said to have similar behaviour to the single-skin columns,
but with a lesser weight and greater stiffness.
concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) member has been widely used in buildings, bridges and other structures owing
to its high strength, good ductility and excellent workability. the member is consisted of outer steel tube and core
concrete, and the cross-sectional shape of the outer steel tube could be circular, rectangular (square), elliptical or
polygonal. recently, CFST members with hexagonal cross section are used in some high-rise buildings for their
aesthetic performance, as shown in fig. 1(a) and (b), where the members act as mega columns in the mega frame-
core tube structures. moreover, the hexagonal shape makes the column easier to be connected with beams and the
core tube.
