NAME OF THE EXPERIMENT:

Performance Test of a Centrifugal Pump Connecting in Series and in Parallel.

INTRODUCTION:

Pump is a mechanical device which when interposed in a pipeline, converts

mechanical energy (supplied to it from some external source) into hydraulic energy
(in the form of pressure energy). The hydraulic machine in which mechanical
energy is converted into pressure energy by means of centrifugal forces acting on
the fluid, is known as centrifugal pump.

Centrifugal pumps are often used together to enhance either the flow rate or the
delivery pressure beyond that available from the single pump. For some piping
system designs, it may be desirable to consider a multiple pump system to meet the
design requirements. Two typical options include parallel and series configurations
of pumps which require specific performance criteria.

Pumps are used in series in a system where substantial head changes take place
without any appreciable difference in discharge. When two or more pumps are
configured in series, the flow rate throughout the pumps remains the same;
however, each pump contributes to the increase in the head so that the overall head
is equal to the sum of the contributions of each pump.

Parallel pumps are useful for systems with considerable discharge variations and
with no appreciable head change. In parallel, each pump has the same head.
Shortly said, pump in series tend to increase head but pumps in parallel tend to
increase capacity.

OBJECTIVES:

 To determine the flow rate (Q) for a single pump, two pumps in series
connection and two pumps in parallel connection.

 To measure the total head (H) developed by a single pump, two pumps in
series connection and two pumps in parallel connection.

 To draw the curves for Q vs. H for a single pump, two pumps in series
connection and two pumps in parallel connection.

APPARATUS REQUIRED:

 Series/ parallel pump arrangement

 Manometer
 Water storage bucket

 Stop watch

 Scale

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND:

A centrifugal pump is used to deliver a specific rate of flow of fluid through a

particular system. The total head necessary to overcome resistance to flow & meet
the pressure requirements of the system always varies for different types of flow
phenomena.

Two or more pump may be arranged for parallel or series operation to meet a wide
range of requirements in the most economical manner. In series operation, the inlet
of the second pump is connected to the outlet of the first pump so that the same
flow rate passes through each pump, but the heads generated by two pumps are
added together for the given flow rate. In parallel operation each pump handles
part of the flow rate. The total flow rate passing the system is equal to the sum of
the flow rates passing through the individual pumps at a given head, which is
applied on each pump.

METHODOLOGY:

 The first pump was primed properly.

 The flow rate & head for a single pump was measured. The gate valve B, C
was closed & the gate valve was opened completely.

 The pump switch was putted on & the flow rate & pressure head was
measured for a steady state condition.

 Series connection pumps were as shown in the Fig 1 & parallel connection
pumps were as shown in Fig 2.

 The procedure was repeated. (3)

 Then average value of the three readings was taken for a single setting.
 At least fifteen readings were taken for the experiment.

APPLICATION:

The centrifugal pump is a rotodynamic pump that uses a rotating impeller to

increase the velocity of a fluid. It is commonly used to move liquids through a
piping system. It is a tool to provide the mechanical energy to the liquid in the
pump constant fluid density & large. Centrifugal pumps are used for long
discharge through smaller heads. The pump is most widely used either in the
household or in the environment industry. When two similar pumps operate in
series, the flow rate is the same as for a single similar pump but the total head is
increased. On the hand, when two pumps operate in parallel the total head increase
remains unchanged but the flow rate in increased.
