Some of the Philippine Agriculture Products

RICE :
• Philippines is the 8th largest rice producing country in the world accounting for 2.8% .
• In 2010, it was the largest rice importer
• 15.2 million metric tons of palay was produced accounted to 21.86 % of gross value
added in agriculture and contributed 2.37 % of GNP.
• The presence of IRRI and Phil Rice – improved rice varieties.
• Due to higher price of rice in the market, rice tariffication law was enacted – provided
unlimited importation of rice.

CORN :
 Second most important crop in the Philippines.
 600,000 households are involved in the work force.
 In 2012, around 2,594 million hectares of land was planted to corn.
 Total production of corn for that year was 7,408 million metric tonnes.
 Alternative source of food especially in cebuano speaking regions.
 Corn is the best source of protein for animal feeds.
 The genetically modified corn is called BT Corn.

SUGAR :

 19 province & 11 regions produce sugarcane in the Philippines.


 360,000 to 390,000 hectares of land are devoted to sugarcane production
 Negros is the largest producing province of sugarcane – 51% of the areas are planted
with sugarcane.
 Mindanao – 20%; Luzon – 17 %; Panay – 7 %, Eastern Visayas – 4 % as of 2012.
 Direct Employment of 700,000 sugarcane workers spread across 19 provinces

FRUITS :
 Philippines is largest producing country of pineapple by 2,198 metric tonnes in 2009.
 Philippines is top three producing countries of banana including India and China,
production is concentrated in Davao and Mindanao.
 Mangoes are third important fruit crop in the country.
 Guimaras is noted of its sweet mangoes and of exportable quality.

COCONUT :
 Plays an important role in the Philippine economy according to FAO of the UN.
 Philippines is the largest producer of coconut by 19, 500,000 tonnes in 2009.
 Production is contributed by medium size farm.
 3.5 million hectares is dedicated in the production of coconut.
 25 to 33% of the population is dependent to coconut.
 Southern Tagalog, Bicol region, Luzon and Eastern Visayas were centers of coconut
production.

RUBBER :

 38 million families are dependent upon the cultivation of rubber trees.


 Rubber is mainly planted in Mindanao and in some parts of Luzon & Visayas.
 Rubber is the source of adhesives and vehicle wheels.
