Freedom is just an imagination

The use of force of William Carlos Williams is a short story that narrates the conflict

between a doctor and his little girl patient which is sick. The story points out that sometimes,

using force is good. In the story however, the way on how he implemented it in his patient is

unprofessional and wrong, even though the intention was good. It also pointed out the

difficulties of a person in separating emotion and standard. In the beginning, the doctor

approached the child very professionally. Over time, the child became more and more

defensive to the point that the doctor didn’t control her which the reason why the doctor

began to get mad at her.

The story made me realize that using force to someone is justifiable if it’s for his own

good, but this is not applied to everyone. There are only certain situations that can be applied

for that. For example, when I was a child, I didn’t want to eat because I wanted to play. My

mother coaxed me to eat first before I played. I didn't want to listen to her but instead force on

with what I want. She didn’t control me so she has beaten me, and told me that my action

wasn't right. After that she was trying again to convince me to eat, and finally I obeyed her

because I don’t want to be beaten again. Using force by our parents is also a way to

communicate that we should become better and to learn from our mistakes. However, the

overuse of it is the one I’m against with.

Here in the Philippines, there are situations that use force, and that happened during

the Martial Law. Former President Ferdinand Marcos declared dictatorship on September 21,

1972. According to Camille Elemia, the media during that regime was forced to be silent, and by

that time he shut down ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation and Associated Broadcasting

Corporation (ABC) facilities. That included radio stations such as DZMT, DZTM and DZWS, which

are the sister radio stations in Davao City, Cebu City, Laoag City and Dagupan City. Never forget

Channel 5 and its sister TV stations in the cities of Davao and Cebu. He said that this network

had been utilized as imperative instruments in the death endeavor against the President of the

Republic of the Philippines by censuring him. Because of that, almost 10,000 people lost their

jobs, according to Filipino Author E. San Juan Jr, citing reports from the International Press

Institute and the Press Foundation of Asia.

Actually, there is a situation now in the Philippines which is using overuse of force, and

that is the war on drug program of President Duterte. That means, if someone doesn't want to

surrender to police, he will be killed by the police. “President Rodrigo Duterte has urged the

killing of drug addicts “to save the next generation from perdition” … At least 7,000 suspected

drug users and pushers have been killed by police or unidentified vigilantes since July. Some

victims include those who have voluntarily surrendered to the authorities. Many fear that

implicating yourself might actually put you more at risk.” (Weiss B, 2017). President Duterte

force people to change by killing them, even though his intention was good but the way how

people force to change wasn’t good.

Overuse of force is not a solution, it is abusive. Using force to someone is good

sometimes, but we should know our limits. Albert Einstein once said that peace cannot be kept

by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.
