SINDHI CULTURE CAN BE VEIWED IN THIS WAY…
Sindhi culture one of the oldest cultures as it belongs to the Indus valley civilizations (3000
BC). The archeological structure of MOHEN-JA-DARO in Larkana is evident in its records. The
number of works of Sindhi culture can be found in various fields includes literature, arts, music,
embroidery, etc. People of Sindh gets viewed as the most hospitable and kind for tourists from
any part of the world. (anwar, 2021)
AJRAK and TOPI are a symbol of Prestige for this culture. This Sindhi craft is popular due to its
unique print and bold embroidery in TOPI. These two pieces of art get offered in ceremonies,
weddings, and other special occasions. The first Sunday of December gets celebrated as Sindhi
cultural day which primary purpose is to mark the significance of ‘AJRAK and TOPI” and cultural
values to remains in the heart of people.
Usually, some people view Sindhis on the dark side, as Sindhis are less inclined towards
education while just wanted to be under the shadow of feudalism. In interior Sindh, children
are not given any attention for their upbringing. Instead, child labor gets practiced for crop
cultivation. In addition, the people of Sindh are seen as are in favor of a specific political group
while not want any other group to involve in the matters of their state.
BUT CAN ALSO BE SEEN IN THIS WAY...
It can be also be seen as Sindhis under the mercy of a particular social group (wadera
system). So they are forced to vote and support that group. Otherwise, their family and
property would be under threat. Under feudalism, Sindhis, with their children, are forced to
work for landlords. It is also that social group that restricts the education and learning of
children. Sindhi culture often gets misinterpreted along political lines. In the past, this culture
was used as a political platform to have a successful campaign in elections. But just because of a
specific interested group, it would be harsh to sideline the whole culture under a political
banner.
Their culture is more than AJRAK and TOPI. Being a land of peace and love, the Sufi poets of
Sindh have contributed to its great cultural and artistic values. Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai is among
the leading figures who played a vital role in Sindhi literature. Through poetry and music,
Bhitai’s work binds the Sindhi peoples with patriotism and oppression against injustice. Now, In
recent times, Bhitai’s URS(death anniversary) is being celebrated as a public holiday in Sindh,
where his poetry and music get praised. Another significant Sufi poet is Hazrat LAL Shahbaaz
qalandar (13th century), whose dome is present at Sehwan, where many people visit each year.
(Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, 2021)
Another irony revolves around this culture in conflict with other communities living in Sindh.
These communities got welcomed in Sindh during the partition period in 1947 when they
refused shelter in Punjab. But soon after decades, they started objection over several matters.
They argued that the Sindhi language is given more priority at the government level instead of
Urdu. Also, Only Sindhi-speaking people get offered government jobs. So these communities
demanded Sindhis to leave Karachi-majority of other communities’ residency. While at many
occasions, Sindhis faced criticism for being natives of Sindh. Thus are equally discriminated
against as any other community. Although, it is the right of the locals to work in their state. But
now, people who are no more immigrants must also be considered as Sindhis. So now, instead
of having hatred against each other, all the people, who are permanent residents of Sindh,
must be given equal rights in Sindh.
