Types of Plate Boundaries

What I Need to Know

In Module I, you have learned about the Plate Tectonic Theory. You were
able to find the location of the epicenters, volcanoes and mountain belts as basis of
the scientists in dividing the plates.

This module is based from the DepEd’s Most Essential Learning

Competency in Grade 10-K12, that is for you to,describe the different types of plate
boundaries. It will lead you to understand the activities of the earth we experienced
that affected us and our environment..

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. name the three types of plate boundaries.

2. describe the three types of plate boundaries
3. determine the directions of the interacting forces between
the plates.
4. identify the kinds of crust involved in each type of plate
boundary interaction.
What I Know

The following questions will give the teacher a better eyesight on how far you have
gained knowledge related to the concept.
PRE-ASSESSMENT

Directions: Read and answer the questions carefully on a sheet of paper.

For questions 1-3,study the map below.

1. What two interacting plates form the divergent plate boundary ? Give at least 2
examples. ____________________________________
____________________________________
2.What type of plate boundary is formed between South American and African
Plates? _____________________________________
3.What two interacting plates form the Transform fault boundary ?
_____________________________________
4.Which picture shows the interacting forces of:

A B C
4.1. Divergent plate boundary ? _________________________
4.2.Convergent plate boundary ? _________________________
4.3.Transform fault plate boundary? _________________________
5.What geologic event is common in the three types of plate boundaries movement?
A. Earthquake B.mountain C. volcanoes D. Tsunami
6.Copy the illustration and draw the forces of interaction on the pair of plates where
each type of plate boundaries motion will cause the plates position by using
arrows.

What’s In

The first lesson in Plate Tectonic Theory was about the distribution of active
volcanoes, earthquake epicenters and major mountain belts. These are visibly
evident in the motion of lithosphere, thus the study of these three types of plate
boundaries will make us understand why and where there are geologic features
in a certain location and what kind of crusts are involved.
This further help you understand the deformation of the lithosphere that
created a great impact not only on the environment but also on us.

The three types of plate boundaries will help enlighten the concepts on Plate
Tectonic Theory.These are:

1. DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY -forces are pulling apart where the

plates will move away from each other.
Interacting crust can be;
1.1. OCEANIC TO OCEANIC
1.2. CONTINENTALTO CONTINENTAL
2. CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY-forces will move
toward each other and plates will collide each other.
Interacting crust can be;
2.1.OCEANIC TO OCEANIC
2.2.OCEANIC TO CONTINENTAL
2.3.CONTINENTAL TO CONTINENTAL
3. TRANSFORM FAULT BOUNDARY -forces move passed each other or at
same direction but at different rate the plates will slide or grind past each other.
Interacting crust can be;
3.1.CONTINENTAL TO CONTINENTAL

What is It

Three types of plate boundary

Divergent plate type boundary a boundary that occurs along the
spreading centers.Where plates are moving apart as the forces interacting are pulling
or moving away from each other and different geologic events will develop. It happens
between the interaction of continental to continental crust and oceanic to oceanic
crust.

Convergent plate type boundary the interacting forces are moving toward
or pushing each other thus causing the plates to collide. This may occur between
continental to continental, continental to oceanic and oceanic to oceanic crust.Several
geologic events will also likely to occur.
Transform fault plate boundary are boundaries at which plates move past
one another horizontally in opposite directions or in the same direction but at different
rates. Most of transform fault plate boundaries are found in the ocean basins, only few
of which are found in the continents.

WHAT’S NEW

ACTIVITY 1

1.
Questions:
1. Forces are moving away or they are heading in opposite direction.
2. Continental crust
3.There will be thinning at the center of the crust,it will sag until it breaks.
4.The crust will separate from each other, moved away and will be filled in with
bodies of water.

5. As the crust is filled in with water in a million years it will submerge under the
water and will become the oceanic crust thus the crust involve in picture D is
oceanic crust as the divergent process continues.
ACTIVITY 2

1. Forces are moving toward each other.

2. A.Continental to continental crust B. Oceanic to oceanic crust
3. They will collide and form mountains.
4. The two oceanic crusts as they collide will form an island arc.
5. Picture C involves the oceanic crust and continental crust.

ACTIVITY 3

1.The interacting forces slide past each other in opposite direction.

2. A and B pictures involved the continental crust.
3.The crust in pic A will have its zigzag like formation at its edges like of pic B.
4.There is a zigzag like margins at its edges and an uneven sides of the crust
will be observed in picture C,a transform fault boundary.

CONVERGENT DIVERGENT TRANSFORM FAULT

Additional Activities
1. Convergent plate type boundary, because the formation of trenches suggests that the
islands were formed from the interaction of dense crust, the oceanic crust.
2. The islands of Palawan, looking on the map there are no traces of red lines which
represent for the fault lines. Therefore,Palawan will less likely experience an earthquake but
may feel the tremors from a nearby places where epicenters may move.
