1.

What are two examples of ecosystem

services described in the flier?
Water purification and pollination.

2. What connection between people and ecosystems

does the flier describe?
People depend on ecosystems for many products and
services such as water purification and pollination.
3. What other useful services or products do ecosystems
provide?
Ecosystem provide many of the basic services that make life possible for
people such as food. Fruits, vegetables, trees, fish, and livestock are available
to us as direct products of ecosystems. It also provide us raw materials like
fertilizer and organic matter as well as medical resources.

4. What is our place in the ecosystem?

Unlike other species such as insects and birds, humans do not always
interact directly with the environment; however, we are still part of
ecosystems. We depend on resources such as water and air for our
survival.
5. What happens when a part of an ecosystem
changes?

When a part of an ecosystem changes everything does as

all of it is connected like a spider’s web.

When the bees go to another

flower, the pollen comes off their bodies. As a result of this pollination,

there is new fruit. The agouti opens the fruit to eat the nuts inside.

Then the agouti puts nuts in the ground to eat lates. Consequently, new Brazil nuts
trees grow.

01 According to the lecture, how are people
connected to the rain forest? What other
ways can you think of?

The link that exists between humans and the rain

forest are the many goods that the latter provides to the
former. One of the examples that the lecture gives are the
building materials and paper that are made from the rain
forest trees. We rely on it more than we would want to
admit as the rain forest gives us almost everything we
need to live, for instance, food. Many well-known products
that we consume in our daily lives, such as bananas,
sugar, coffee and tea came from this place
02 According to the lecture, how are people
destroying the rain forest? What other
reasons can you think of?

Humans take advantage of the things the rain

forest provides them in order to live, but by doing so,
they are also destroying it during this process. The
lecture mentions how people are burning trees to
build farms, causing many animals to lose their
homes and food and in the long run also causing their
death. Human activities such as logging, where huge
areas of the rain forest are cut in one go so that we
could have that beautiful furniture at home, and
mining, in which the poisonous chemicals that are
often used always end up in rivers, are the biggest
cause of forest destruction.
03 Which statement would the professor
agree with? Which statement do you
agree with? Explain your answer.

• People should stop rain forest destruction; we

need to protect planet Earth.
This is the statement that both the professor and I
agree with. It goes without saying that we need the
rain forest more than it need us as it is not only our
food source but also medicinal. It even provides us
goods from other categories such as cosmetics,
soaps, shampoos and many things that we use on a
daily basis. Therefore, if we don’t want to lose it, we
should protect it from none others than ourselves, as
we are the ones who are causing the biggest
damage.

1. The ecosystem services of air purification provides clean air.
2. The ecosystem is in danger due to deforestation.
3. Plants help to improve air quality; therefore, less plant cover
means less capacity to clean our air.
4. Yes. If human activities such as logging are reduced or at
least regulated, it will protect this ecosystem service.
