GM 6T70/75 and Ford 6F50/55
Basic Description
The 6T70/75 and the 6F50/55 is a fully automatic, 6-speed, front-wheel drive, electronic-controlled
transmission. It consists primarily of a 4-element torque converter, a compound planetary gear set,
friction and mechanical clutch assemblies, a hydraulic pressurization and control system. There are 2
variants of the transmission, based on torque capacity. Architecture is common between the variants,
and component differences are primarily related to size.
The 4-element torque converter contains a pump, a turbine, a pressure plate splined to the turbine,
and a stator assembly. The torque converter acts as a fluid coupling to smoothly transmit power from
the engine to the transmission. It also hydraulically provides additional torque multiplication when
required. The pressure plate, when applied, provides a mechanical direct drive coupling of the engine
to the transmission.
The planetary gear sets provide the 6 forward gear ratios and reverse. Changing gear ratios is fully
automatic and is accomplished through the use of a transmission control module (TCM) located
inside the transmission on the 6T70/75. The TCM on the 6F50/55 is outside the transaxle in the
power control module (PCM). The TCM receives and monitors various electronic sensor inputs and
uses this information to shift the
transmission at the optimum time.
The TCM commands shift solenoids and variable bleed pressure control solenoids to control shift
timing and feel. The TCM also controls the apply and release of the torque converter clutch which
allows the engine to deliver the maximum fuel efficiency without sacrificing vehicle performance. All
the solenoids, including the TCM, are packaged into a self-contained control solenoid valve assembly.
The hydraulic system primarily consists of a vane-type pump, 2 control valve body assemblies,
transfer drive gear support assembly and case. The pump maintains the working pressures needed to
stroke the clutch pistons that apply or release the friction components. These friction components,
when applied or released, support the automatic shifting qualities of the transmission.
The friction components used in this transmission consist of 5 multiple disc clutches. The multiple
disc clutches combine with one way diode to deliver 7 different gear ratios, 6 forward and 1 reverse,
through the gear sets. The gear sets then transfer torque through the transfer drive gear, transfer
driven gear and differential assembly.

Basic Description
The transmission may be operated in any of the following gear ranges:
• PARK (P)
This position locks the front wheels and prevents the vehicle from rolling either forward or
backward. PARK is the best position to use when starting the vehicle. Because the
transmission utilizes a shift lock control system, it is necessary to fully depress the brake
pedal before shifting out of PARK. For safety reasons, use the parking brake in addition to
the PARK position.
• REVERSE (R)
This position allows the vehicle to be operated in a rearward direction.
• NEUTRAL (N)
This position allows the engine to be started and operated while driving the vehicle. If
necessary, you may select this position in order to restart the engine with the vehicle
moving. This position should also be used when towing the vehicle.
• DRIVE (D)
Drive range should be used for all normal driving conditions for maximum efficiency and
fuel economy. Drive range allows the transmission to operate in each of the 6 forward gear
ratios. Downshifts to a lower gear, or higher gear ratio, are available for safe passing by
depressing the accelerator or by manually selecting a lower gear in the manual mode
range.

• 3-5-Rev
This is one of the areas where there is a difference between GM and Ford. The wave plate on the
Ford is .045” and the distance where the clutches ride is 1.115”. On the GM, the waved plate is .130”
and the distance where the clutch rides is 1.180”. The GM wave plate has been redesigned, the new
plate part number is 25254103.
Ok, here is where the problem comes in, if for some reason you were to install the GM .130” wave
plate into a Ford, what is going to happen is the 3-5-Reverse clutch will be mechanically locked up.
This will cause the Transaxle to bind when in the drive range. If we were to put a Ford waved plate
into a GM, we would have too much clearance causing a slip or the 3-5-Reverse piston to over
extend the bore which could cause damage to the piston seals.

Failed Passed
The two valves that you always want to test are the AFL (solenoid regulator valve) and the TCC
regulator valve. The best way to test the valves is with a vacuum testing stand. Anything above 15 in.
is a good valve, anything below 15 in. is a bad valve. GM also has issues where the 4-5-6
Accumulator piston wears out. Sonnax does not have valves available yet.
Solenoid Testing
The solenoid bodies are different between the Ford & GM. Ford does not use a Transmission
Electro-Hydraulic Control Module (TEHCM). The Ford solenoid body has 7 solenoids where GM has
8 solenoids. Ford uses 5 shift solenoids, GM uses 6 shift solenoids. On both the Ford and GM units
there are 3 Normally Low solenoids and 3 Normally High solenoids. Ford has 1 On/Off shift solenoid
and GM has 2 On/Off shift solenoids. The TFT sensor is also located in the solenoid body on both the
Ford and GM.
A normally low pressure solenoid has low pressure when the solenoid is off. As the PCM or TCM
starts to energize the solenoid, the pressure will increase. The solenoids that are normally low are
the SSA, SSC (Ford), pressure control solenoids 4 and 5(GM) and both the Ford and GM TCC sole-
noid. A normally high pressure solenoid has high pressure when the solenoid is off. As the PCM or
TCM starts to energize the solenoid, the pressure will decrease. The normally high solenoids are
SSB, SSD (Ford) pressure control solenoids 2 and 3 (GM) and both the Ford and GM EPC solenoid.
Ford uses 1 on/off solenoid which is used to determine the direction of the vehicle forwards or back-
wards. GM uses 2 on/off shift solenoids to determine the direction of the vehicle. The solenoid firing
order charts are shown on page 8.

GM has a solenoid pressure testing gauge- SPX Kent Moore DT-47825-100. This can be used to test
the solenoids on or off the vehicle. Attach the gauge block to the solenoid body, torque the attaching
bolts to 44 lbs. in. Use 90-100 psi air pressure. Use a power supply with an AMP meter in series
connected to the solenoid to be tested. Use the chart on page 25 to select the correct port for the
solenoid to be tested.
WARNING Do not energize the solenoid for more than 2 minutes or the solenoid could be
damaged. This test is a static test not a dynamic test therefore the solenoid
could pass these tests & still be bad because they are not running the test under
a load or different flow conditions.

NOTE ANYTIME THE SOLENOID BLOCK OR A TEHCM IS REMOVED FROM THE VALVE

TO TEST SOLENOIDS OFF THE UNIT THE ADAPTER CABLE MUST BE ATTACHED TO
THE VEHICLE, SO THE SCANNER CAN OPERATE THE SOLENOIDS.

• Differential/Transfer Shaft Shim Selection Continued
Place the new races on top of the differential bearing and transfer gear. Bolt cases together using the
spacers and bolts supplied in the shim selection kit to 18 lbs. ft. Rotate the differential ten times to set
the bearings to the races. Use the feeler gauge that came with the shim select tool. Select the largest
gauge to fit into the slot on both the differential and the transfer gears. Using the chart below
determine the correct shim to be used under each of the bearing races.

Install the park rod ramp with the ID Carefully rotate the IMS just past
mark up. Park pawl assembly, guide, low detent
and lube dam. Torque to 106 lbs. in
Rotate switch and push in until the nail can be installed to secure IMS.
The IMS can be changed in the car, it is very difficult. You must be really careful when removing the
IMS because the park rod can come out of the park pawl. If this were to happen the transaxle will
need to be removed to reinstall the park rod.

Solenoid Cleaning
• Procedure
There is a solenoid cleaning procedure that can be done. Using a scan tool, enter special testing or
special functions, transmissions, and select solenoid cleaning, this procedure will pulse the solenoids
rapidly while changing the amount of pressure that goes through the solenoids to attempt to flush the
solenoids out. If the unit is heavily contaminated with metal this procedure probably will not clean the
metal out completely because a solenoid is basically like an electromagnet. Without demagnetizing
the solenoids, the metal will not be flushed out completely. However it really is a good idea to perform
this solenoid cleaning procedure before the transaxle is removed for repairs. If the vehicle is placed
into park with the engine running after about 1 minute of idling the solenoids will go into a cleaning
mode. However it is not an aggressive cleaning mode like with the scan tool. The solenoids will be
turned on and off but the pressures will not increase.
Relearn/Basic Settings
Any time an internal repair is done, then a Fast Learn will need to be performed to reset the adaptive
shift strategy. On Ford vehicles you will not need to use a scan tool as long as the battery has been
disconnected for approximately 20 minutes then the shift adapts will automatically reset.
If the solenoid block or the TEHCM have been replaced then the computer will need to be
programmed to accept the new components.
