Signs and Symbols in Urban Design

- Signs and symbols are use to convey information and pictorial form. Pictures can make
the instructions clearer.
- Signs and Symbols should be universal and can be understand by everyone despite of
having different languages.

Mandatory Signs
- Mandatory Signs are signs that tell what to do, rather than not what to do. Carry out the
action to the given sign.
- Usually in Color Blue

Examples of Mandatory Signs


- Social Distancing Sign
- Usually seen in public areas like parks
and malls

- Pedestrian walkways
- Usually seen in pedestrian lanes and
near sidewalks
- Loading Bay Area
- Usually seen in exits and service areas
of restaurant loading area.

- Near Trash Bins


- Usually seen in public open places
like parks and picnic grounds to
remind people to keep the place clean.

- Usually seen near in structures under


construction.

Prohibition Signs
- Signs that must not do or prohibits.
- Usually in Color Red

- Sign and Symbol that warns people from a dangerous situation.

- Usually seen in Gas Stations or
Laboratories with highly flammable
