ABSTRACT
Cutaneous wound healing is the process by which skin repairs itself. It is generally
accepted that cutaneous wound healing can be divided into 4 phases: haemostasis,
inflammation, proliferation, and remodelling. In humans, keratinocytes re-form a functional
epidermis (reepithelialization) as rapidly as possible, closing the wound and reestablishing tissue
homeostasis. Dermal fibroblasts migrate into the wound bed and proliferate, creating
“granulation tissue” rich in extracellular matrix proteins and supporting the growth of new blood
vessels. on the academic performance of the students of Cantuhaon National School, Brgy.
Cantuhaon, Palompon, Leyte. Two sets of questionnaires guided the study. The questionnaires
are made up of five YES or NO questions and the other set of questionnaires is composed of
opinionated questions.
Ultimately, this is remodelled over an extended period, returning the injured tissue to a
state similar to that before injury. Dysregulation in any phase of the wound healing cascade
delays healing and may result in various skin pathologies, including nonhealing, or chronic
ulceration. Indigenous and traditional medicines make extensive use of natural products and
derivatives of natural products and provide more than half of all medicines consumed today
throughout the world. Recognising the important role traditional medicine continues to play, we
have undertaken an extensive survey of literature reporting the use of medical plants and plant-
based products for cutaneous wounds. We describe the active ingredients, bioactivities, clinical
uses, formulations, methods of preparation, and clinical value of 36 medical plant species.
Several species stand out, including Centella asiatica, Curcuma longa, and Paeonia suffruticosa,
which are popular wound healing products used by several cultures and ethnic groups. The
popularity and evidence of continued use clearly indicates that there are still lessons to be
learned from traditional practices. Hidden in the myriad of natural products and derivatives
from natural products are undescribed reagents, unexplored combinations, and adjunct
compounds that could have a place in the contemporary therapeutic inventory.

Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
Wound healing, as a normal biological process in the human body, is achieved through
four precisely and highly programmed phases: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation,
and remodeling. For a wound to heal successfully, all four phases must occur in the
proper sequence and time frame. Many factors can interfere with one or more phases of
this process, thus causing improper or impaired wound healing. The factors discussed
include type of wound, age and weight, diet, behavior, medical history, infection, wound
care. A better understanding of the influence of these factors on repair may lead to
therapeutics that improve wound healing and resolve impaired wounds.

partially spiraled leaves that extend vertically from the pot in a striking shape this
indigenous plant is the ideal addition to your indoor spaces (Candy, 2019).
The Snake Plant cleans air better than most other indoor plants as it has the ability to
absorb excessive amounts of carbon monoxide. Additionally, it emits oxygen and filters
other toxins from the air such as benzene, xylene, trichloroethylene and formaldehyde
(Candy, 2019). Also, the hypoglycemic effect of the Sansevieria trifasciata (Ruscaceae)
bioactive component can restore pancreatic β cell function, thereby increasing insulin
secretion, inhibiting glucose absorption in the intestine and inhibiting the action of the α-
glucosidase enzyme. Sansevieria trifasciata (Ruscaceae) has been traditionally used by
Orang Asli in Perak, Malaysia for the treatment of ear pain, swellings, boils and fever.
Specifically, the leaves of the plant believed to be the treatment of diabetes mellitus,
earache, pharyngitis, skin itching, and urinary diseases as an analgesic and antipyretic
(PubMed, 2009).
The leaves of the mother-in-law's tongue extracted with ethanol or aquadest solvent
contain various phytochemical compounds commonly grouped in the form of alkaloids,
flavonoids, saponins, glycosides, terpenoids, tannins, proteins, and carbohydrates.
Several studies that have proven the biological effects of the ethanol extract of the
leaves of the mother-in-law's tongue are the analgesic and antipyretic effects,
antibacterial, and antioxidants. In addition, the leaves of mother-in-law's tongue also
have an anti-diabetic effect with in vivo test (PubMed, 2009). Phytochemical screening of
the plant has shown the presence of carbohydrates, saponins, glycosides (Yoshihrio et
al., 1996), steroids (Yoshihrio et al., 1997) in the leaves since no data are till now
reported on the claimed activities. This viper or snake flower is curing how many
decades and can we use it leave in natural way (Ghana, 2016).
Aloe Vera has been used for thousands of years. What we know that the ancients could
only observe is that Aloe Vera has over 200 active beneficial components in it. The gel is

99% water, filled with minerals, vitamins, enzymes, amino acids, polysaccharide, and
fatty acids. Today, Aloe Vera is cultivated for cosmetic and wellness purposes
throughout the globe. The soothing, moisturizing gel offers relief for all types of skin
conditions such as burns, wounds, skin infections, and yes, Aloe Vera can benefit the
healing process of scar tissue and assists in reducing scars. Applying Aloe Vera gel on a
scar right when your skin begins healing after an injury will help strengthen the collagen
structure within it. Because the gel contained within the plant contains many nutrients,
vitamins, and antioxidants, it helps the skin repair itself while lessening irritation. The
polysaccharides, gibberellins and glycoproteins found in Aloe Vera have properties that
promote skin growth and repair, and are known to enhance cell growth, help speed
wound healing, and even fight acne scarring. (Aloecure, 2018)
Our skin is a big deal – literally. It’s the largest organ in the body and one of the most
complicated. It has many roles in the maintenance of life and health, but also has many
potential problems, with more than 3,000 possible skin disorders. Not only does the skin
hold everything in, it also plays a crucial role in providing an airtight, watertight and
flexible barrier between the outside world and the highly regulated systems within the
body. It also helps with temperature regulation, immune defence, vitamin production,
and sensation. The skin is unique in many ways, but no other organ demands so much
attention and concern in both states of disease and health. There is a huge focus on skin
health, with fierce competition to have glowing, clearer, healthier, younger and fresher
skin. And this focus can cause secondary problems with self-esteem and mental health
(Cara, 2018).
Skin is one of the most sensitive areas of the body that react to the slightest pressure
and the reaction is manifested as different ways such as swelling, redness, blisters and
even corns, which is a natural reaction caused by the body to protect itself (Patrick,
1993).
Skin health is important not only your appearance, but more importantly because skin
performs so many essential tasks for the body. Skin protects the body from the many
viruses and bacteria exposed to daily. It also protects from the sun's rays - specifically
ultraviolet light - that can damage cells. Healthy skin produces vitamin D when exposed
3
to the sun, and vitamin D is important for many body functions. Having healthy skin also.
helps body keep its temperature at a constant level. Healthy skin also helps reacts better
to important changes around by feeling pain or pressure.
Aloe vera accelerates wound healing by promoting the proliferation and migration of
fibroblasts and keratinocytes and by protecting keratinocytes from preservative-induced
death (David, 2018).
Several studies that have proven the biological effects of the ethanol extract of the
leaves of the mother-in-law's tongue are the analgesic. Medical efficacy of Sansevieria
leaves relates, among others, to the treatment of diabetes mellitus, ear-ache,
pharyngitis, skin itches, and urinary diseases as analgesic. The decreased blood
glucose levels in the treatment groups were most likely due to the active substance(s)
contained in the Sansevieria leaf decoction. Sansevieria trifasciata leaves extracted in
ethanol or water contain various phytochemical compounds, which are generally
grouped in form of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, glycosides, terpenoids, tannins,
proteins, and carbohydrates. Flavonoids are known as a natural hypoglycemic (PubMed,
2009).
