As a creative practitioner, I often produce different kinds of design by myself. From forming
a basic structure and topic for a project, to finalizing it with lots of overview, I had done most of the
work by myself. Hence, If I face individual tasks, I would be very confident in my own capabilities of
managing it. However, as I am now a university student, being able to work in groups is an essential
skill that I have to learn and adapt because, in the future, how can I do everything by myself?
Interestingly enough, I did not realize such a realizable fact until I participated in a collaborative
group work.

In the second project, I and three other teammates had to create a digital designed
magazine. As soon as we started to divide work, I immediately volunteered to be the designer of the
group. I thought, with this role, I can freely design the magazine for the group without having to
worry about others having a huge influence on the design intake, so I was very happy and excited to
do the work. However, things took a turn when I tried to download the Adobe Indesign application
and my PC crashed. Therefore, I have to leave a role that I was most confident in and most
comfortable with for another teammate whom I did not know if she could do it well enough. I ended
up managing the role of a writer/editor and a photographer, which I was capable of doing but not as
confident as being a designer. As a result, I was very worried about how well I would communicate
with other team members or how I could participate well enough with a role that I was barely used
to.

When it comes to teamwork, each individual has his/her own strength. And for my group,
which includes many experienced students in design, they have surprised me with their work.
Particularly, Ngan, the member who replaced my designer role, was an excellent designer. She
ended up being the only designer of the team because nobody else could access the application.
Although having so much work on her shoulder, she was able to create such a time-consuming and
intricate design for our team. I was astonished as soon as I saw her work. I did not expect that
someone else could do such a great design that made me, a person who is only comfortable with my
own work, have little-to-no comments on her work.

Thanks to that, I then learned to believe in my team members’ work. I trusted her to take
the design for the group and she trusted me to take on the role that I have moderate experience on.

We ended up with a very well-designed magazine. Everyone in the group is happy with it. We even
finished the magazine two weeks earlier than the due date, so you can see how well we have
worked as a group.

Despite the fact that the experience made me quite anxious since it forced me to step out of
my comfort zone. However, without it, I couldn’t have been the place I am today. I could still have
been a selfish teammate who doesn’t value others' opinions. Our magazine could not have been as
good as it is right now if I didn’t give myself a chance to experience becoming a writer and editor of
the magazine. Not only does the learning experience make me become a better teammate, it also
makes me feel comfortable and prepared for future teamworks, making me feel secured to step out
of my comfort zone and to try our new things.
