    This session aims to improve the willingness of your players to take a chance and shoot for
    goal from outside the penalty area.
    What this session is about
    1. Having a positive attitude to shooting from outside the box.
    2. Improving technique and accuracy when shooting.
    What to think about
    To perform a driven shot with the instep (laces): Keep your eyes on the ball; knee/head over
    the ball; toe down on the kicking foot to strike with the laces; make contact with the middle
    to top half of the ball; follow through with the kicking foot.
    Aiming the shot low can have the benefit of getting deflections that wrong-foot the keeper.
    Players can also try swerve shots and chips from distance.
    You will need ball boys to collect mishit shots.

    What you get your players to do
    Use the final third of a pitch. You will need a goalkeeper, server and shooters.
    Shooters line up, one behind the other, 25 yards from goal. They take it turns to pass to a
    server (who is positioned two yards outside the penalty box to one side of the “D”), run at an
    angle towards goal to receive a return pass (which the server plays square), then control and
    shoot.
    After a set time, the server and players repeat the drill, but from the other side of the “D”,
    forcing the players to use their other foot.
    To progress, the player must shoot first time.
    Shooters pass to a server (S), receive a return pass, control the ball and shoot from outside the
    penalty area.

    Development
    Mark out an area 30 yards wide by 25 yards long from the top of the penalty area, as shown
    in the middle picture. Create two cone goals at the end opposite the full-size goal.
    Play 3v3 plus one neutral player in the smaller area, with a keeper in the full-size goal. One
    team attacks the full-size goal, the other tries to score in the cone goals.
    The neutral player plays for the team in possession. Players from both sides are not allowed
    to exit the playing area. Once a team has scored three goals, the teams switch roles.
    One team tries to score in two cone goals while the other targets in the main goal. A neutral
    player (N) plays for the team in possession.

    Game situation
    Duplicate a penalty area directly opposite one, as shown in the bottom picture. Play a five-a-
    side game, including keepers, with 3v1 in each half of the pitch, plus a keeper in each goal.
    The teams of three are attacking the goal in the other half so they can pass to their team mate
    there or take long shots.
    Players have to remain in their own half of the pitch. Goals scored from over the halfway line
    count double.
    To progress, one team is allowed to push one player into the opposing half, to create a 3v2
    (and a 1v2 in the other half).
    The team that scores most goals wins.
    In a small-sided game, goals scored from the opposite half count double.
