A. How does the Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) help in our food security?
Answer:
It is inarguable that food security is becoming more and more unattainable for
Filipinos today, especially with the COVID-19 pandemic situation. According to an
article published by CNN last July 2020, 59 million Filipinos suffer from food insecurity.
It is one of the highest recorded numbers of food-insecure people in Southeast Asia from
2017 to 2019. In line with this, researchers see Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)
products as a potential to help in our food security. GMO products do not only reduce the
need of farmers for agricultural inputs such as water and fertilizer, but it also helps in
improving nutritional quality, as well as tastier food. In food security, the food must be
sufficient, safe, and nutritious, all while meeting the preference and dietary needs of the
people. In addition, GMOs help us in securing food in such a way that ensures the safety
of the buyer, since there is still no evidence that consuming GMOs harm our health.
Lastly, GMOs have the potential to reduce death and disease issues greatly, which is of
big help in our food security as well, since it aims to create an active and healthy life.
C. As a future Engineer who believe in the sanctity of human lives would you prefer to
go natural process rather than those of genetically engineered food? Why?
Answer:
As a future engineer, I believe it is more beneficial for us to eat genetically
engineered food. Considering the sanctity of human lives, genetically engineered food is
known to be healthier than non-GMO food. In addition, GMO products are way cheaper
than non-GMO ones. The fact that these products are enhanced for our health is the
reason why I prefer genetically engineered food to naturally processed food. Aside from
the fact that genetically engineered foods are cheap and healthy, it also contains fewer
pesticides, which may lessen the possibility to impose danger to our health. Contrarily,
naturally processed food contains fertilizer and pesticide to speed up the process of the
production of crops and avoid pests from pestering the product, respectively. Yet
fertilizers and pesticides do not do much good for public health since the usage of these
products is potentially harmful to us. Although genetically engineered foods are cheap
and healthy, one possible threat that they may bring is allergic reactions. Since
genetically engineered foods are crops that have undergone cross-breeding processes,
some of the products that we eat may include products that we are allergic to, so if we
want to avoid this, we should read what ingredients a product may contain. Hence, this
goes to show that although there is a disadvantage in eating GMO food, there are a lot
more benefits that GMO products have than non-GMO products.
