EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This report prepared on the basis of practical experiences of Meghna Bank Limited & NRB
Commercial Bank Limited. The internship programs help me a lot to learn about the practical
situation of financial. This program helps me to implement my theoretical knowledge into
practical realistic environment. In the age of modern civilization Bank is plying its spending
role to keep the economic activity. In fact, there is hardly any aspect of development activity
whether state inspired or otherwise where Bank do not have a major role to play.

Financial analysis is important trend to evaluate any bank’s performance. On my report I had
to study Meghna Bank’s & NRB Commercial Bank financial statements and give significant
feedback regarding to changes the financial position. In my MBA program, I have spent 3
months in Meghna Bank, Dhanmodi branch and learning the activities of general banking,
general advance and foreign exchange department. I have analyzed the financial statement to
find out Meghna Bank ratios by using past and current records. After ratio analysis I come to
know that ratio helps to overcome the past flows and help to take future decision. So, it’s
very necessary for every organization.

Introductory Part

1
1.1 Introduction
Banking plays a vital role in the financial life of a business. The importance of Bank can be
termed as the blood of the economy. Although Bank produces no capital, their necessary
actions facilitate the process of production, exchange, and distribution of wealth. In this way,
they develop into active partners in the process of economic development and growth. In the
Stephenson &Britain, “Banks are the custodians and distribution of liquid capital, which is
the life-blood of our commercial and industrial activities and upon the prudence of their
administration depends on the economic well-being of the nation.” It facilitates the flow of
funds in our economy and ensures financial resources are to be paid efficiently towards
promoting economic development and growth. Words of Every business need capital or fund
required for running its business operation. Bank facilities this service to the customer and
help them to run their business smoothly. Banks are also providing various services to the
customer such as locker service, deposit services, online money transfer, performance
guarantee, letter of credit, etc. Banks are selling the risk to the clients and helping the client to
secure the contract and transaction. Banks large scale of the product is not only helping the
person but also improving the industrial sector to increase the growth of the Economy of the
country. For banking service, the living standard of the people is also growing day by day. It
is easier for the person to take house loan, car loan, and loan for the business purpose, which
is defiantly helping them to improve and change the standard of living. Meghna Bank
Limited & NRB Commercial Bank Limited came out in reality through the initiatives of
some dynamic people, who were from different sectors of commerce, trade and industries. A
fourth generation Bank, Meghna Bank Limited commenced its operation from May 09, 2013
with a vision of "To be recognized as an essential institution for the unbanked through
zealous participation in the financial inclusion process". Meghna Bank's Pay-Off line
"Together We Sail" exemplifies our commitment to contribute building up an enlightened
and prosperous nation.

1.2 Origin of the Report


Internship program is designed for the student of Masters of Business Administration
Program (MBA) of Stamford University on completing the course to acquire experience on
the practical application with the theoretical knowledge. This report was done during my
internship period in Meghna Bank Limited to fulfill the requirement of the course under the
supervision of Rima Parvin the topic was selected with able guidance of the supervisor.

The Topic of the report is “Financial Statement Between Meghna Bank Limited & NRB
Commercial Bank Limited”. Financial Statement is a structural and logical way to present
overall financial performance of financial institution. It is also help to evaluate and decision
making for business operation. Business stakeholders try to concentrate to get overall
business overview from profitability, liquidity, assets management and solvency ratio
analysis.

1.3 Objectives of the Report

The report is descriptive in nature. To prepare this report gathering data is very important.
The information was collected from both primary and secondary sources of data. The
information was collected within the organization from the Corporate Division of Meghna
Bank Limited.

1.4.2 Data Collection Method:

This report is prepared based on information collected from two sources i.e. Primary sources
and Secondary sources.

Qualitative and Quantitative each research is conducted to analysis the primary and

Microsoft Excel.

The scope of the study is to have an idea about Financial Statement between Meghna Bank
& NRB Commercial Bank Ltd. The report starts with the outline of the organization in
focus, presenting the mission and vision of organization. It accompanied by the global
perspective and look into the future. The researcher provides information about the strengths,
weakness, opportunities and threats of the organization. Those who looking for the

Ltd they might get help from this report. The study explores the present market scenario of

1.6 Limitations of the study
Legal obligation
Due to some legal obligation and business secrecy the bank was reluctant to provide some
sensitive data. Thus, this study limits only on the available published data and certain degree
of formal and informal interview and limited survey.

Extensive Nature
Although the particular study is extensive in nature, hard effort was given to make the study
worthwhile and meaningful even then there exists some limitation.
Lack of time
The researcher was in the bank for three months so within this short span of time it is very
difficult to be familiar with all the activities of the bank

Lack of Supervision by the bank officers


As the officers were busy with their daily working activities, they were not able to give me
much time apart from their daily working activities.

Restricted Information
There were various types of information’s that the bank officers cannot disclose due to the
security and other corporate obligations.

2.1Company profile
A fourth generation Bank, Meghna Bank Limited commenced its operation from May 09,

“Together we sail” exemplifies their commitment to contribute towards building up an
enlightened and prosperous nation.

2.1.1 Objective
To be among the best service provider in the industry by ensuring customer satisfaction
through the application of technology, professionalism and nursing.

Meghna Bank is proving various services like others commercial Bank. Those services are-

2.1.4 Collection of deposit:


They are also collecting deposit like other Banks. Their interest rate of deposit is
comparatively higher than others Banks rate of interest 8% to 10% depending on amount of
deposit.

2.1.5 Loan: They are providing several types of loan such as-

 Personal loan: These types of loan is for professional individuals and businessmen,
the purpose of this loan is for buying some consumer item, household
products(Television, fridge) or some special purpose(health treatment and travel).
They can easily take this loan and will perform these types ‘of consumption activities.
In this sector, Bank provides 50000 to 500000 depending on the purpose of the client.
The rate of interest in this loan is 13%.
 Express loan: Any individual or company takes this loan. Amount is not more than
5lac and EMI is for 36 to 60 months depending on the loan amount.
 Home Loan: This type of loan is for professional individuals and businesspersons
who want to purchase apartment, home or other home completion. Meghna Bank is
giving 5lac to 1.2crore in this sector. The rate of interest is 11%. Bank is giving this
loan generally for 3 to 20 year.
 Doctor’s Loan: This type of loan is only for the doctor. They are giving 2lac to 10lac
in this loan area.
 Car loan: This loan is for professionals or person who are buying car by taking loan
from the Bank. The loan amount is 5lac to 40lac, which is, actually depends on client.

2.1.6 Credit Enhancement services:


Performance guarantee: This is one type of guarantee provide by Bank to secure the
contract between client and contractor. It protects the agent or govt. agency from losses
incurred in case of contractor fail to perform. Meghna Bank is proving this guarantee on the
behalf of their client. This is generally 100% margin and head office generally proving this.

Letter of credit: Bank provided guarantee on the behalf of the importer to pay the amount to
the exporter bank. Principle branch is generally providing request letters and this procedure
done by the head office of Meghna Bank.

2.1.7 Credit card:


Meghna Bank is proving two types of credit cards. Those are Meghna visa gold credit card
and silver credit card. The applicant need minimum 20000-taka monthly income for applying
for the silver card and applicant must need minimum monthly income 50000taka per month.

2.1.8 Clearing services:


If any client has an account in the Meghna Bank and this client also has an account on the
other Bank .If they are providing cheque of the other Bank to Meghna Bank, Bank sent it to
the Bangladesh Bank and Bangladesh Bank sent it to the other Bank and they check all
feature of cheque and if everything is clear or correct they sent the amount to the client
account. If cheque value is normal, (less than 5lac) it generally comes within 2.30 pm of the
day and value is high (more than 5lac), it takes 6.30 pm of the day of clearing cheque .

2.1.9 Account services:


Meghna Bank is proving different types of account services. Customer can easily open an
account in the Bank according to their needs. They are offering-
Current Account: Current account is very popular and common type of account. As we
know, money can withdraw from anytime and there is no interest in this account. Customers
who are interested in this account they can easily open a current account in Meghna Bank by
proving photo, photocopy of NID card, nominee’s information, photocopy of utility bill.
Savings Account: Meghna Bank is also offering several types of savings account services
with attractive interest rate. Their savings account are-
Salary Account: It is only for their internal employees who are working in the Bank. Their
salaries are providing in this account.
Senior Citizen Account: Meghna Bank is offering senior citizen account to their clients who
are more than 50 years old. Interest rate is 4% in this account.
Young Star’s Account: Meghna Bank is offering this type of account for young people (age
10-18). This type’s f account is opening by the parents for their Childs. Debit card is also
providing with this account.

Sreyoshi Account: This account is only for women. The main benefit of this account is all
charges are half.
Meghna Salary Account: This account is for an organization that needs to provide the salary
to their employees through Bank. Meghna Bank provided the salary on the behalf of the
organization. However, need minimum 25 employees to open this account.

Four percent interest is applicable for all types of savings account. Anyone can easily open a
savings account by proving the required documents like photo, Photocopy of TIN certificate,
photocopy of utilities bill etc.

Bank is also opening the partnership and corporate account. For opening these account, client
need to give the additional document to open these types of account.

2.1.10 Require document for partnership Account:

 Two copies passport size photographs of each partner


 Trade license of partnership business
 TIN certificate
 Copy of NID card, valid passport etc

2.1.11 Require document for corporate Account:


 Two copy of photographs of each directors
 Copy of Trade license

 List of the director with full information

2.1.12 Some Account code:


This code helps you to understand what types of account it is. When you saw the starting
digit of the code, you can easily understand what types of customer or employees account it

There are several departments are performing all activities of Meghna Bank (principle
branch). All the orders come from the top management and head office and departments are
responsible for performing these all activities. There are three departments of principle
branch, that are-

2.1.13 General Banking Departments


This department serves directly to the customers. This department is providing customer
services that include Account opening, cheque clearing, cash clearance, remittance services
etc. This department is taking immediate action to provide the best services to the customers
when customers need these particular services. In principle branch, front desk officers,
clearing and accounts officers are giving this service to their clients.

2.1.14 Loan and Advances Department:


This department is proving all types of loan offered by Meghna Bank. Types of loan offered
are short, medium and long term. The other classification loan is working Capital and Term
Loan for corporate houses.
Short Term Loan:
 Loans that are provide for a tenor of not exceeding 1 year is called short term loan
 This type of loan is usually provided to support working capital need of
manufacturing and trading businesses
 Products include: Over Draft, Secured Over Draft, Cash Credit (Hypo), Loan Against
Trust Receipt (LATR)

Medium and Long Term Loan:
These loans are provided mainly for the following purposes:
Retail:
 Any purpose loan against salary
 House building financing

Corporate
 Term Loan for setting up new plant
 Term Loan for capacity expansion/BMRE of existing plant
 Corporate term loans usually provided for factory building construction, machinery
purchase etc.
 Before providing any loan, bank does proper due diligence to guard against any
default risk.

 Acceptable Credit Grading of the borrower
 Industry outlook
 Experience of the management

2.1.15 Foreign Exchange Department:


This department is responsible for opening trade services such as Letter of credit, export and
import handling, foreign currency exchange etc. This department contributes more in foreign
collaboration and help the importer and exporter of the country. This department is also
responsible for remittance services and maintaining the international account. In addition, this
department is also selling the foreign bond. When someone need to sent money in
Bangladesh, they can easily sent the money from abroad though the Meghna Bank and this
department responsible for give it to the real owner of the money.

2.1.16 Corporate Banking of Meghna Bank:
Meghna Bank is proving the large scale of the product and services o their corporate client.
They are also proving various scales of funds according to their client’s needs and
preferences. Meghna Bank is facilitating financial and advisory service to their client. This
financial service helps to increasing the growth of the corporate sector and which helps to
contribute more in the corporate sector of the country. In corporate Banking, Meghna Bank
try to maintain the dynamic relationship and long term, relation with their corporate client
and their main aim is to maintaining long-term profitable relationship with their client. The
Relationship Manger of the Bank deals with the corporate clients and provides the financial
facilities to them. Bank’s expert employees are providing the advice and proper direction
about their investment. Meghna Bank contributes the financial facilities to the some sector of
the countries. Those are including RMG,
telecommunication, Agriculture, steel manufacturer, tourism and other business sectors.
Before proving the finance to the various sectors, Bank’s corporate management team check
all liquidity and profitability of the sector, if they are satisfied, they provide the financing.
However, this analysis and discussion is not applicable for renowned and profitable company.
Meghna Bank are proving various financing those are –

Working capital finance: It is short-term loan provided by Bank for the fulfilling the daily
requirement of the business corporation. This financing is helping the business to run their
business very smoothly. There are several types of working capital finance by the Bank.
Those are cash credit, Bank overdraft, working capital loan, bill discount, letter of credit,
commercial paper etc.

Industrial finance: Meghna Bank is providing various types of loan to the industrial sectors.
They are generally providing medium term to long-term finance to the industry, which helps
to develop the industry.

For particular projects: Meghna Bank is facilitating the loan for specific projects in terms
of term loan such as civil construction, purchasing of machinery etc.

Trade financing: Trade financing is for the export and import. Meghna Bank are providing
fund to facilitating the all requirement needed for the export and import. For import, Bank is
providing the full support though –

 Letter of credit (LC)
 Stand by letter of credit
 Shipping guarantee to the importer
 Payment against document (PAD)
For export, Bank is providing full support to the exporter by facilitating pre- shipment and
post shipment financing which is needed to perform the exporting activities.

2.1.17 Daily Activities of Meghna Bank (Principal Branch):


Principal branch is one of the biggest branches of Meghna Bank with 40 efficient employees.
Their each department is engaging to fulfill the requirement of customer. General banking
department is providing large service area to the clients. In generally Banking, customer
service department’s is engaging of Varity of services including Account opening services,
transaction of pay order, gift chaque, providing interest of treasury bills, providing credit card
slips for payment . Accounts department of the branch is receiving the cash, at the same time
giving the cash to client by receiving the cheque. In addition, other clearing department
(Batch) of the GB is clearing the cheque with the help of Bangladesh Bank. They are
collecting cheque from the client and sent it to Bangladesh Bank. Some Other Bank official
are collecting voucher from all officials and dividing it into four areas including Account
(Debit, Credit) and GL (Debit, Credit) and calculating the total transaction of the Bank in
particular day and maintaining the daily expenditure of the Banks. Head office generally
provided the all direction to the branch and head of branch and deputy manager are
distributing this direction to all employees. In addition, other officials of the GB selling the
treasury bills and authorized the transaction of the branch. Loan and credit department is
responsible for dealing and maintaining the relationship with client by providing large scale
of loan products. They are also receiving the payments of the loan and installment. Moreover,
foreign exchange department is responsible for delivering the services including exchanging
the currency, Letter of credit and trade finance etc.

2.1.18 SWOT Analysis:
SWOT analysis is nothing but analysis and understanding of Strength, Weakness,
Opportunity and threat. In this area, I discover some strength, weakness, opportunity and
threat of the Meghna Bank. SWOT analysis of Meghna Bank-

Strengths:
 Qualified management team
 Better work environment
 Location of the branches at suitable places
 Financial liquidity is high
 Good relation with client because of their hospitality
 Better customer services

Weakness:
 Newly enter into the industry
 Some inefficient officials
 Interest rate is low than other competitive Bank
 Specific area of services because of newly established Bank
 Less ATM booth and branches
 Manual registration is used in some specific purposes

2.2 An Overview of NRB Commercial Bank:
It was the long & cherished desire of Bangladeshi expatriates in different countries of the
world to establish a new bank for economic development of the motherland through their
hard earned foreign currency. Demand for new Bank by the NRBs anticipating more flow of
inward foreign remittance and scope of investment by other investors of different countries is
an acceptable ground for consideration.
Many NRBs of developed countries have well education and professional expertise in
different fields who are potential resources for our country.
NRB sponsors shall not only bring huge investable fund but also “state of the art technology”
for building up a world standard Bank tailored towards meeting local developmental needs of
the country.
Flow of inward foreign remittance shall not be increased only by pushing our manpower
outside the country unless they are made fit & skilled to compete their peer group of other
countries, a bank alike NRB may play a vital role in achieving the desired goal.
Besides, in the prevailing situation of Banking operation in Bangladesh it is highly expected
that the new bank shall be able to compete the other banks adopting new concepts of Risk
Management and building up good Assets and Health of the organization. We believe in
consideration of the above issues application for the desired bank was invited by Bangladesh
Bank and LOI was issued in favour of eligible entrepreneurs.

Mission of NRB COMMERCIAL BANK
 The bank shall devote in creating confidence for investment among the Bangladeshi
expatriates offering them desired services, attractive profitability and secured
investment through our various financial products.
 The bank shall create extra-ordinary opportunities to the intending wage earners in
getting jobs abroad through our dependable and reliable intermediary services.
 The bank shall arrange need based effective training and education programme for the
intending FC wage earners of Bangladesh to survive against competitors of other
countries.
 The bank shall deliver service excellence through providing existing & innovative
products in cost & time efficient manner, to its all retail & corporate customers.

 The bank shall constantly focus and monitor the changing needs and aspirations of its
customers, to develop new and reengineer the process of service delivery.
 The bank shall always be vigilant to maintain banking business risks within its
tolerable limit in order to protect depositor’s interest and ensure highest return to the

securitization, issuance of mutual fund etc., for addressing the needs of newly

2.2.5 Milestones in the Development of NRB Commercial Bank Limited


Like previous director report, no material change has been occurred in the company nature of
business for the year 2018. NRBC Bank emphasis on expansion of network such as 08 new
branches and another milestone of NRBC Bank is its full-fledged banking operation through
small Banking Booths for more coverage in the geographical area of Bangladesh. A2i,
Agricultural Business Center and Symantec are partner of agent Banking system. Currently
558 agent points are working all over the country. 18 BRTA booths established in different
district office for collection of Govt. revenue. Another milestone or charge in operation is that
Bank has got 12 banking booths permission from Bangladesh Bank. Banking Booths is full-
fledged banking operation like small size branch under a mother branch. It will facilitate with
all types of banking services including payment of foreign remittance. “Donia Banking
Booth“ - the first Banking Booth of NRBC Bank started its operation at a densely populated
area in Donia, Dhaka.
The Board of Directors has an aspiration to establish Islamic banking window in the 66
the meeting held May 28, 2018, necessary process is underway the same. If Islamic banking
wing comes into effect, it will bring another dimensional change in the nature of business of
the company affairs. NRBC is also trying to channelize the foreign remittance service by
establishing relationship with reputed remittance agency in abroad so that beneficiary will get
the money from all branch networks, Banking booth and agent point.

2.2.7 Risk Management of NRB Commercial Bank Limited:
Risk management is a discipline at the core of every financial institution which encompasses
all the activities that affect its risk profile. It involves identification, measurement, monitoring
and controlling risks to ensure proper management of risks related to bank business. The
objective of risk management is to identify and analyze risks and manage their consequences.
Perhaps the banking sector has the most specific focus on the management of financial risks.

Bangladesh Bank advised the banking industry to identify the risk factors associated with
their business and to take effective measures in the functional process to minimize and
control the risks in the area of lending, internal control, liquidity and treasury management.
Introduction of risk analysis culture, loan classification and ratings are the broad schemes for
assessing the risk status of banking assets. NRB Commercial Bank Limited Ltd has compiled
different Risk Manuals and several Instruction Circulars have been issued to handle the issue
of risk management. Besides, Risk Management Policy has already been formed and is being
updated from time to time. There are the mandatory Six Core Risk Guidelines with which all
are already familiar.

The bank has already implemented the risk management guidelines which cover the
following areas:

Above Fig-3.1 has shown the compare of net interest margin between Meghna Bank Ltd. And
NRB commercial bank Ltd. Analysis shows NRB Commercial Bank gained highest net
interest income in FY-2013 of 98%, Meghna Bank 90%. But after the years both banks have
decreased their interest margin as shown in above figure. The lowest interest margin gain on
this chart in 2017, the Meghna Bank gained 28% of their net interest margin.

The figure-3.2 shows that net non-interest margin of from the year of 2013-2019 the Meghna
bank Ltd. gained respectively 36%, 44%, 47%, 56%, 59%, 58% and 61% which indicates that

the other hand, NRB Commercial gained this non-interest income 46%, 55%, 59%, 63%,

Interpretation
The figure-3.3 has shown the net operating margin of those banks where, Total income of
NRB Commercial Bank stood at BDT 594.49 million at the end of 2013. Interest income
accounted for 97.87%, exchange gains 0.25%, commission 1.50% and other income 0.38% to
total income. Other hand, Meghna Bank gained highest operating margin in 2019 at 0.61%
when NRB Commercial bank stood 0.72% of their net operating margin. Total operating
expenses was increasing in 2017(1094, 811,622) which is higher than all other previous
years. So operating expenses are increasing in each year but they are not practicing CSR.

Interpretation
The above line chart expressed the non-performing assets to equity capital ratio of MGBL &
NRB Commercial bank Ltd. From year of 2013-2019 Meghna bank expressed this ratio
respectively 0.019%, 0.018%, 0.0375%, 0.047%, 0.051%, 0.053% & 0.061% of their non-
performing assets to equity capital ratio. On the other hand, NRB Commercial bank stood

equity capital ratio. The analysis indicates, NRB Commercial bank ltd. stood up their non-
performing ratio the Meghna bank ltd.

3.7 Findings of the Study
 Meghna Bank Ltd. will need to increase their net interest margin, which is found very
lowest than NRB Commercial Bank Ltd.
 Net non-interest margin of Meghna bank Ltd. found very strongest position for the
selected years. But the other hand, NRB Commercial gained this non-interest income
which were significantly higher than Meghna Bank Ltd.
 Total operating expenses was increasing in 2017 for both banks which is higher than
all other previous years. So operating expenses are increasing in each year but they
are not practicing CSR.
 EPS chart indicates those two banks were gained their EPS growth year by year
soundly.
 ROE has reached a very satisfactory level in the selected financial years, considering
industry average.
 Meghna bank should have to increase their Return on Assets.
 Net Profit Margin Ratio of two banks weren’t found satisfactory.
 Asset Utilization Ratio expressed that, both banks have kept their asset utilization
ratio under 50% or not above 55% which indicates those banks were decreased their
expenses in those selected financial years and those years their income growth were
found optimal.
 The value of equity multiplier indicates the amount of assets per taka of shareholders‟
equity. the amount of equity 6.299 total shareholder in 2015 in where it was only
3.825 and 1.827 in the year of 2014 and 3013 respectively, Higher value of equity
multiplier that, bank has used more debt to convert into assets with share capital.

4.1 Recommendations

Meghna Bank Limited


 Meghna Bank’s should maintain their current ratio standard.
 Net profit ratio is decreasing. They should increase their net profit by investing the
capital.
 Total Asset Turnover ratio also decreasing. Meghna Bank should reduce operating
expense and total assets should enhance.
 Meghna bank return on assets is very low and they should increase fixed assets.
 Capital Adequacy ratio was upward trend. Meghna bank should increase the Capital
Adequacy ratio.
 Meghna Bank management should ensure their proper implication.

NRBC Commercial Bank Limited

 NRBC current ratio should maintain their current ratio standard.


 Return on equity (ROE) is decreasing. They should increase their Return on equity
(ROE) by investing the capital.
 Net Profit Margin Ratio is decreasing. They should increase their by investing the
capital.
 Return on equity (ROA) ratio also decreasing. NRBC Bank should reduce operating
expense and total assets should enhance.
 NRBC debt-to-equity ratio (D/E) is very low and they should increase fixed assets.
 Debt to total assets (D/A) was upward trend. NRBC bank should increase the Capital
Adequacy ratio.
 NRBC Earning Per Share is very low and they should Earning Per Share
 NRBC Bank management should ensure their proper implication.

4.2 Conclusion
Financial analysis plays a very important role in providing facts and figures for the decision
makers. In the same way ratios will act analysis kit in the hands of financial analyst, these
ratios will help is and answering the basic question like why, how what of these statements.
Now a day’s financial analysis is very much in consideration for decision making, in deciding
what to do and what not to do are required to analyze the data as par as their requirements.
Thus, in this project was brief outline of ratio analysis like how to analyze the facts and
