(Convenience Store.
ALICE stands outside by the solid brick wall, contemplating
where to aim her graffiti. IZZY enters.)
IZZY:
What are you doing here?
ALICE:
Nothing.
IZZY:
Yeah? Gosh, that’s funny. Me too.
ALICE:
Don’t try it, Izzy, you’re too much of a nerd.
IZZY:
Is that spray paint?
IZZY (CONT.)
What are you gonna do with it?
ALICE:
I guess I’m gonna spray. Paint.
(PAUSE)
IZZY:
You left so early this morning. I thought--I
don’t know what I thought. And mom couldn’t take
me to school, so I walked. I walked all the way
here.
ALICE:
You won a prize.
IZZY:
Was this where--?
ALICE:
That’s what the police tape indicated.
IZZY:
I don’t think you’re supposed to take that stuff
down.
ALICE:
Have some if you want.
IZZY:
Okay.
ALICE:
You can do all kinds of things now, Ethan’s not
around to--whatever. Whole new world.
IZZY:
Funny, this was the one thing he didn’t do
exactly right
(PAUSE)
ALICE:
Yeah.
IZZY:
If they say he did it--
ALICE:
That’s the question?
IZZY:
I mean, he did it.
ALICE:
Yes.
(PAUSE)
IZZY:
I just don’t know anymore.
ALICE:
What don’t you know?
IZZY:
Well, I guess, like, how we--still love him.
ALICE:
How could you possibly not know that?
IZZY:
Alice--
ALICE:
How could you possibly not know?
IZZY:
They said--
ALICE:
“How do we still love him?”
IZZY:
You didn’t look up to him like I did.
ALICE:
Has this made you crazy?
IZZY:
Alice, don’t be mean--
ALICE:
He was my brother, too.
IZZY:
But he robbed people. He stole money--
ALICE:
Yes.
IZZY:
He made everybody think he was good.
ALICE:
Don’t you?
IZZY:
What?
ALICE:
Miss Do everything right. Miss predictable. Miss
follow the directions.
IZZY:
I don’t lie like that.
ALICE:
Okay.
