Complete the sentence below:

In this interactive white board activity, the children will touch the board to identify the
different characteristics of each state of matter and learn about the types of matter
phases we see in our everyday lives .

Activity  The lesson will begin by grouping students into groups

of two or three around the room. All students will be
seated facing the white board so that they may pay
attention and participate in the lesson. I will begin this
lesson in Science about matter by passing out a rock, cup
of water, and a balloon so students may get a visual and
hands on feel for the real qualities of the 3 states of
matter. We will spend roughly about 10 minutes in our
groups observing and discussing the 3 items features and
physical characteristics. Each group will receive 2
worksheets one is a KWL chart which they will complete
as a group the K & W before beginning the lesson. The
second one which will be used during the IWB lesson
which they can follow along during each slide. Before, I
will lead a brief discussion amongst the students and
what they have written down in their charts. We will be
using Smart exchange slideshow called “ Matter, matter,
matter”.
 The first activity in this lesson is introducing what matter
is to the students.
o The 2nd slide asks a question “what is matter”.
Students will be given 1-2 minutes to brainstorm
together an idea of what matter is. Then I will
call on each group to share their answer.
o Next the 4th -6th slides is where students will be
able to participate and use the IWB. In order to
give everyone a chance to come up and use the
eraser to see examples of what each state is, I
will be using popsicle sticks with each students’
name on it. As each student comes up to reveal
the examples, the other students will be using the
second worksheet to draw/write each example.
On the 6th slide I will have each student come up
to the IWB and write their example of a gas.
o On the 7th slide is a word and description sorting
activity. Students in their group together will
work together to match the states to their correct
description. The students will use one worksheet
and write their names at the top. Then each
group will be asked one by one to come up to the
IWB and drag the word to the description they
chose.
 After completing the activities. Students will finish the
“L” in their KWL charts and share it with their
classmates. To further the lesson’s impact and using the
IWB, I will have students come up to the board and write
their favorite state of matter followed by an example of
their choice next to it and listing it’s characteristics.
