Let’s Recall (Review)

Prose is the most common form of writing used in both fiction and non-
fiction. It comes from the Latin word, “prosa oratio,” meaning straightforward.
Prose uses ordinary language that adds style, pace and flow in a literary text.
Good prose engulfs the reader and takes ordinary sentences and makes them
into art. Normal everyday speech is spoken in prose, and most people think
and write in prose form.
Before we proceed, let me know your prior knowledge on the different
types of prose.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

A prose is any type of written text that is not classified as poetry. They are
written in complete sentences and organized in paragraphs. Prose is a form of
language that has no formal metrical structure. It applies a natural flow of speech, and
ordinary grammatical structure, rather than rhythmic structure, such as in the case of
traditional poetry.
Example of a Poetry Verse vs. the Prose Form
Below is a poetry verse from a popular work of Robert Frost:
“The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.”
(Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, by Robert Frost)
Prose Form
Following is the same sentiment written in prose form:
“The woods look lovely against the setting darkness and as I gaze into the
mysterious depths of the forest, I feel like lingering here longer. However, I have
pending appointments to keep, and much distance to cover before I settle in for the
night, or else I will be late for all of them.”
The above paragraph is conveying a similar message, but it is expressed in ordinary

language, without a formal metrical structure to bind it.
Types of Short Prose

1. Nonfictional Prose:
A literary work that is mainly based on fact, though it may contain fictional
elements in certain cases.
Examples include biographies and essays.
2. Fictional Prose:
A literary work that is wholly or partly imagined or theoretical.
Examples are short stories and novels.

3. Heroic Prose:
A literary work that may be written down or recited, and which employs many
of the formulaic expressions found in oral tradition.
Examples are legends and tales.
4. Prose Poetry:
A literary work that exhibits poetic quality – using emotional effects and
heightened imagery – but which are written in prose instead of verse.
Features of Prose
• Prose does not have poetic measures. As such, it is written in complete
sentences and organized into paragraphs.
• Prose does not have a particular rhythm or meter. It does not set rules for
metrical structure unlike some forms of poetry.
• Prose does not rhyme. It makes use of natural language.
