were incurred during the accounting period. In case of adjusting depreciation expense,

QUESTION 18

according to AASB1021 and AAS4.

According to AASB1021 and AAS4, under the allocation approach, the depreciable amount of
a depreciable asset must be allocated on a systematic basis over its useful life. The
depreciation method applied to an asset must reflect the pattern in which the asset's future
economic benefits are consumed or lost by the entity. The allocation of the depreciable
amount must be recognised as an expense, except to the extent that the amount allocated is
included in the carrying amount of another asset.

QUESTION 19
Explain why it is important for estimates of the useful lives and expected residual values of
depreciable non-current assets to be reviewed annually.

To review annually the estimated useful life and expected residual values of depreciable non-
current assets is important because they affect the size of a company's depreciation or
amortization expense. It is important to note, however, that useful lives are merely estimates.
After all, nobody knows what an asset will be worth 10 years in advance or whether it will
actually last that long.
