The COVID-19 outbreak had greatly affected adolescents for the past six months. Many are
experiencing the COVID-19 stress, the lack of socializations that results to the feeling of
loneliness and the pressure from schoolwork which can lead to depression. A lot are worried
about this pandemic and the stress we go through that is linked to the increase of loneliness,
depression, and anxiety. Even so, there are different activities that can lessen these feelings.
Activities like family time, virtual calls with friends, and physical activities can help us cope
up with the situation were going through right now, but studies show that more social media
consumption can result to less loneliness but higher depression. Being aware of adolescents’ peer
interactions and social media use is significant (Ellis, Dumas, & Forbes,2020). Virtual
connections may not provide sufficient support for those who are already going through stress
and depression. Help from parents and mental health professionals might be needed. According
to Ellis, Dumas, & Forbes(2020),” Time with family and virtually connecting to friends, as well
as greater physical activity all related to lower loneliness, beyond COVID-19 stress levels. In
short, there may be some good options for reducing loneliness during times of physical
distancing.” (para. 44)
The causes of mental health due to COVID-19 can vary from person to person, due to the
differences of biological, behavioral and environment causes. Each person has a different way of
perceiving the current quarantine situation, so there is not definite cause of sudden appearance of
mental health issue to otherwise mentally healthy individual.
According to Maslow's Theory of Human Motivation, which outlines a set of basic human needs,
such as physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. We
humans are social animals, we feel the need to connect to one another . The current pandemic,
prohibits us from interacting with others, thus directly affecting the three of the five categories of
Maslow's theory (love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization), with all these needs
affected, there will be an effect on one's mental health and wellbeing, since these needs aren't
satisfied to an extent that one expects to receive.
The Covid-19 has a severe impact on higher education as schools have shut their premises in
response due to lockdown ,this crisis has exposed the many inadequacies and inequities in our
education systems from access to the broadband and computers needed for online education, and
the supportive environments needed to focus on learning up to the misalignment between
resources and needs.
Although higher education institutions resolves face to face lectures or learning to online
learning this closure affects students in their capacity of learning ability and skills, due to
significant differences in the productivity of education systems, spending without improving
productivity is likely to negatively affect the quality of education. Students had to adapt the new
education policy as well as the teachers had to adapt to the new pedagogical concepts and modes
of delivery of teaching, for which they may not have been trained which is harder for both parties.
To ensure the continuity of education despite the lockdown, According to the higher education
institutions they have sought to use technology and offer online classes and learning experiences
as a substitute for in-class time throughout the pandemic.
