under control of survey team.

Contraction Joints

Contraction joints will be constituted after hardening of concrete by means of mechanical

equipment and sealed as per drawings.

Expansion joints must be formed with the thickness of joint filler specified on the drawings
and finished off with the correct joint sealant.

Before installing the joint sealants, the grooves must be cleaned of all loose material, and
concrete must be surface dry. The sealants must be installed in accordance with the sealant
manufactures instructions, which must be considered to be part of this Specification.

Expansion Joint Filler must be made from either oak fibres impregnated with bitumen or cork

 Formwork may be made from timber, plywood or metal. Formwork shall conform to
shape, lines, grade and dimensions indicated on construction drawings.
 Forms will be erected true to line all joints either vertical or horizontal, and will be
rigidly braced and adequately supported by falsework, props, wedges or other means
so as to carry the weight of the concrete to be placed without sagging or moving from
true line and position.
 The contact surface of all forms shall be dressed with approved mould oil. Care shall
be taken to keep steel reinforcement free from any such mould oil.

 Every tipe of joint shall be installed as specified on the drawings.

 Formwork/timbers should be clean and kept in good conditions.

 Prior to placing reinforcement, all formwork will be checked for accuracy by YGDR &
TSGI construction supervisor and survey team. They shall be rigidly constructed and
sufficiently tight to prevent loss of grout and fines.
 Plumb and direction of formwork shall be checked by TSGI and YGDR construction
supervisor before concrete pouring.
 After finishing formwork; surplus and all dirts on form surfaces and construction joints
will be properly removed before installing reinforcing bars and placing concrete.

8.1.2. Reinforcement

prevent buckling & sufficiently high to keep to the steel clear off the ground and shall
be covered.
 Before fixing, wire mesh (reinforcement) shall be cleaned from all loose material, dirt,
ice and oil, or any other substance which may adversely affect adherence within
concrete.
 Reinforcement must be fixed to form a rigid assembly which will not come apart
during concreting, using tie wire.
 Q20 mm Dowels will be used in expansion joints. Dowel bars shall be greased before
installation.

8.1.3. Concrete Pouring

Concrete Cover will be:

- For the reinforcement 40 mm
- For curbs 25 mm

 The loose material at the excavation bottom level will be removed and leveled and
compacted by vibration using mechanical compactors.
 The site will be checked and approved by survey team before pouring of concrete.

Pouring of Concrete: Concrete shall be transported by trans-mixers to site within the

specified time. Placement shall be done either directly from trans-mixer or by using concrete
pump depending upon the physical conditions on site.
 Precautions shall be taken to prevent segregation.
 Precautions shall be taken at the cold weather conditions according to TS 1248.
 Concrete works shall be a continuous operation through to completion. Concrete shall
be deposited as close as possible to its final position in the forms. Free fall, in excess

before approval of the reinforcement and formwork by Contractor.
 All concrete must be compacted by vibration using mechanical vibrators.
 Particular care must be taken to ensure that the concrete is compacted in the corners
of formwork and around reinforcement. Vibrators will not be used to transport
concrete within the forms.
 Surface shall be finished by wooden/steel trowel to reach a smooth surface. After
tamping the concrete must be finished with a stiff brush finish.
 Allowable concrete pouring time is 2 hours after the transmixers leaving the batch
plant.

Finishing / repairing works: After removal of forms;

 Improper concrete surfaces will be repaired with approved repair material according
to repair method if necessary.

8.2. Concrete Curing / Protecting and Stripping of Formwork

 All concrete shall be cured according to weather conditions. Curing and protecting of
concrete shall be satisfied the TS 1247 & TS 1248.
 All concrete shall be cured properly preferably by preventing escape of water from the
concrete (in warm weather conditions by ponding & soaking with additional water or
by curing compounds; in cold weather conditions by covering with PE sheet, tent etc).
Curing shall be minimum 3 days in accordance with TS 1247 & TS 1248 and
recorded.
 Exposed concrete surfaces must be protected until the concrete is hard enough to
resist washing or leaching.
 Forms will not be removed until concrete has attained sufficient hardness so as not to
be thereby injured.
 All formwork must be cleaned of hardened concrete, rubbish and dirt, and coated with
mould oil before re-use.
