PUROC, LIZA M.

In your assignment after making your Genealogy, I asked you to read the story of John F. Nash. He is a
mathematician who struggled with an emotional disturbance. Now, please watch the attached movie “ A
beautiful mind” and answer / reflect on the following questions:

1. John Nash is the main character of the film where he experienced emotional disturbance
specifically schizophrenia. What did you understand about schizophrenia (5 points)
 Based from the movie, what I understad about schizoprenia is that it is a serious mental
disorder wherein he interpret reality abnormally. He also experiences combination of
hallucinations and delusions and extremely distorted thinking and behaviour which
impairs his daily functioning. Common symptoms include false beliefs, unclear or
confused thinking, auditory hallucinations, reduced social engagement and emotional
expression, and inactivity.

2. Knowing the signs and symptoms of schizophrenia, What typical symptoms of schizophrenia did
he experienced as shown in this film? Describe at least 5. (5 points)
 He experiences halluciantions, delusions, disorganized thinking, reduced social interction
and he has nonsensical speech

3. Write about the two delusional characters.  How did Nash learn to cope with this aspect of his
illness? (5 points)
 First character is Charles, whom he thinks his roommate and also considers him as his
bestfriend, next is Agent Parker, who is an agent who recruitted John to be a secret code
breaker and lastly is the little girl, who is Charles’ niece
 John has finally cope with his delusions by ignoring them one by one, that they are not
real

4. “I don’t much like people and they don’t much like me”.  Comment on John Nash’s statement
by using examples from the film. (5 points)
 John was totally socially awkward, he acts superior toward others, hard to relate to and
make connections with, and he has unpredictable outburst. John is also pre-occupied with
his own thoughts; he’s a loner who is also more concerned with theories and not building
social relationships among his colleagues.
 Another scene was when his colleague beat him at the game and he utters that he should
have win because he had the first move and his plan was perfect

5. What types of supports do you think does John Nash need to lead a successful, normal if not
“new normal” lifestyle. (5 points)
 John needs the support of his wife and his son, aside from the medical support as for his
medication for him to be able to be back on his tract again. Despite of his illness, his wife
stays strong by his side and able to help him recover from his illness and also he needs to
have self support, for him to be able to fight or cope from his delusions and
halluciantions

6. What would you do if someone you cared about was diagnosed with a mental illness? How would
you try to help them? How would you try to help yourself? (5 points)
 The first thing I must do if someone I know is diagnosed with shcizoprenia, I will educate
firt myself regarding the illlness for me to know the do’s and don’t’s especially that this
is a mental disorder and for me to be aware of his presenting manifestations and make
sure to encouraged him to adhere in his treatment and recovery plan. And I will instruct
him about relaxation to release his tension to be free from any stress and a hallucination,
these techniques includes deep breathing exercises, mindfulness andprogressive muscle
relaxation.

7. What are you overall feelings/reaction about the movie? (10 points)
1. What did you like in this film? Dislike? Explain and use examples.
 For me, what I like about this movie is about how his wife stays stronger knowing that
her husband was diagnosed with schizoprenia, although she was shocked but she slowly
accept it and did not abandoned him. Another scenario that I appreciate is how he sees
and communicates with those delusional characters that look so real. And lastly, I
appreciate also of how John was able to crack the mathematical code all in his head
without any aid of calculators or computers

2. What did you dislike in this film? Explain and use examples.

 What I dislike in this film is when her wife left her son to John knowing that he has
illness especially that john escapes in taking his medications. There’s a chance that John
might atack his own son and might even kill him. My heart beats faster as I wached this
part in the movie.
