REFLECTION ESSAY: MY 2021 CHRISTMAS EXPERIENCE

Filipinos celebrate Christmas in a different way than people in other nations. Christmas is the
most important holiday for Filipinos because we are a Catholic country. Traditions such as
Noche Buena, Caroling, and Simbang Gabi are always a priority for us. Even though the
majority of Filipinos regard it positively, I believe that Christmas in the Philippines has turned us
into materialistic people. I was reared as a child who was exposed to the idea of excessive
Christmas expenditures and who was always looking for gifts from an early age. As a child,
Christmas meant acquiring new toys and snacks, as well as waking up to a Christmas tree with a
pile of presents on Christmas morning.

Christmas to me is a holiday, which involves spending time with family and friends, beautifying
the entire house, inside and out, and buying, for the people I love. It means the greatest to me to
do this with the people I care about. I need to spend Christmas with my family. My
Grandparents' residence in Bulacan is where we normally congregate and celebrate. I and my
other relatives rent a vehicle, and the time we spend together in the van is considered bonding
time for me. For our celebration, my aunties, their spouses, and children travel from a
neighboring town. Before Christmas eve, we spend time baking cookies, making fudge, creating
Afritada and Menudo, and cooking a large Christmas meal with all the fixings. The children
enjoy seeing one another. It's a fun day for them, as they play games and share the new gifts and
toys Santa Claus gave them. It's difficult to restrict them when they're so anxious to beautify. It's
enjoyable to spend time with my family over Christmas. It all begins on Christmas Eve when I
wake up in the morning and prepare to clean the house. To clean the entire house, this technique
takes around two hours. When the house is clean, my family begins to visit me. The time I spend
with my family is when we reminisce about old memories from our life throughout the year. My
family enjoys making a variety of dishes, including tamales. While I'm waiting for the tamales to
cook, I'm usually on the phone with one of my friends, asking how their preparation went.

Christmas decorating is a lot of fun. Every year, my father designs a new background scenario
for the Nativity scene that he exhibits. He, my brothers-in-law, and my husband begin by
decorating the house's exterior and front yard. My parents add some more to the outside decor
every year. The inside of the house is decorated by my mother, sisters, our children, and myself.
My mother has so many indoor decorations that they can't all be displayed at the same time.

I'm not a big fan of shopping, but I do enjoy it during the holiday season. We normally buy our
gifts on Shopee and Lazada since the pandemic affects us. We go to a mall one day. The stores
are lavishly decorated and festively lit. With so much money to spend, I'm prone to get carried
away. The concept of spending too much money, I must admit, is rarely on my mind. I can just
imagine the sight on my family's faces, and it brings me such delight. I am extremely blessed to
have my family at all times of the year, but especially at Christmas. When demonstrating to my
family how much I value them and what they mean to me. That is extremely significant to me.
For me, Christmas is about spending time with family, loving one another, and expressing how
we all feel.
