APJ ABDUL KALAM TECHNOLOGICAL LTNIVE

Seventh Semester B.Tech Degree Supplementary Examination

Course Code: ME405

Course Name: REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING
Max. Marks: 100 Duration: 3 Hours
Use of charts and tables permitted

PART A
Answer ony three full questions, each cuwies 10 marks. Marks
a) Define COP and show why the value of COP can be more than one? Why I TR (5)
of refrigeration is equalto 3.516 kW?
b) With the help of schematic and T-s diagrams describe the working of a Bell (5)
Coleman Refrigeration cycle.
a) State rnerits and demerits of a vapour compression system over air refrigeration (5)
system. Also illustrate the effects of wet and dry compression on the COP

b) Identify additional components in an actual vapour compression refrigeration (5)

system as compared to a simple vapour compression system. Describe the
function of each.
A simple air cooled system is used for an aeroplane to absorb a heat load of l0 (10)
TR. Atmospheric temperature and pressure are l0 oC and 0.9 bar respectively.
Due to ramming the pressure of air is increased from 0.9 bar, to 1.013 bar. The
temperature of the air is reduced by 50"C in the heat exchanger. The pressure of
the compressed air is 3.5 bar and the pressure inside the cabin is l.0l bar. The
temperature of air leaving the cabin is 25oC. Assume that all the expansions
and compressions are isentropic. Determine: 1) Power required to take the heat
load inside the cabin; and2) C.O.P. of the system. s

An ice plant owner wants to find out the efficacy of using an ideal simple (10)
vapour compression system operating between 1.5 bar and 7 bar for his plant
that produces ice at -50C in a rate of l0 kglhr. Pipe water which is available at
300C is used for making the ice. ln this cycle, it is considered that the
Refrigerant l34a enters the compressor as saturated vapour and leaves the

condensor as saturated liquid. Determine the following data for helping the ice
plant owner to take a decision: l) the capacity of the plant in kW, 2) the mass
flow of the refrigerant 3) work of the compressor and 4) the COP of the system.
Take latent heat of ice as 334 kJkg; specific heats of ice and water are
respectively 2.1 kJ/kg-K and 4.18 kJ/kg-K. Assume all components are 1007o
efficient.

PART B
i\'!I Answer any three questions, each curries 10 marks.
full
5 Differentiate between multi-evaporator system with multiple compressors (10)
q systems with l) Individual expansion and 2) multiple expansion. Represent the
differences using the schematic and P-h diagrams.
,l
6 Write short notes on the following: 1) Cut-off system in refrigerant (10)
compressors, 2) Defrosting and its need, 3) Quick freezing in food industry 4)
Plate freezer for meat preservation and 5) Controls in refrigeration systems
7 How does the Ammonia-water Vapour absorption system produce cooling? (10)
Using a schematic diagram describe the working.
8 What are the different types of Compressors used in refrigeration system? (10)
Describe with a neat sketch any one type of evaporators commonly used.

PART C
An)r*n, any fourfull quesrions, each carries 10 marks.
9 Define following terms: i) Thermodynamic wet bulb temperature ii) Relative (10)
humidity iii) Bypass factor iv) Coil ADP v) Effecrive temperature
l0 a) Differentiate between comfort and industrial air conditioning process. (5)
b) Describe the.positioning of different components in a Split air conditioning (5)
system working on simple vapour compression system using a schematic
representation. Also give the justifications.
I I a) The sensible heat gain of a room is 4.8 kW and the latent heat gain is 1.4 kW. (5)
The air in the room need to be conditioned such that 25 0C is the DBT of the
room always. The air is supplied at 0.5 m3/s to the room. The supply air from
the AC cooling coil enters the room at 17 uC and 90%o RH. Find the resulting
RH of the room.
b) What are the different factors that affect the human comfort? Sketch a typical (5)
comfort chart?
